1. KNOW YOURSELF
Take some time to figure when you’re at your best. No matter where you work, learning which time(s) of day you are most productive can help you schedule the tasks that take the most focus during the day. Prioritization of tasks can be key!
2. MAKE A LIST
Making a list can seem a little out of date. However, keeping track of all your to-do’s will help you stay focused while working from home. That list will serve as a daily reminder of what has to get done. You should write your to-do lists right at the end of the work day. Doing this will help make a good transition from work like to home life.
3. CREATE A HOME OFFICE
Working from home is very flexible letting you work from pretty much anywhere but it's highly advised to set up a home office. If your working from arrangements is only temporary creating a whole home office may not be needed.
4. PLAN OUT YOUR DAY
Start with the time you know you’re the most productive and focused then establish your work hours around those times. That means setting and sticking to boundaries. This is critical to staying focused while working from home. Let your friends and family know that even though you are home you don't have unlimited time to socialize. Let them know you will chat with them when you take breaks. If you also have kids home right now we suggest researching ways to stay focused working from home with kids.
5. LIMIT MEDIA TIME
This is good advice for everyone whether you are still at the office or working from home. It’s easy to get distracted by the constant influx of breaking news notifications, social media pings, etc. Checking out what’s happened every time your phone dings can take your attention away from your work, making you a less productive.
6. SET A TIMER ON YOUR PHONE
To prevent the distraction of your phone, set the timer on your phone for 90 minutes, turn off push notifications, and then put it out of sight.
Not only does the timer help structure your time, it is also a reminder that you’re not supposed to be looking at your phone.
7. USE A CALENDER
Post a calendar in your home office so you can see what tasks you need to work on. If a normal calendar isn't your thing you could use a whiteboard, a planner, or an online calendar. The idea is to have a visual of what you need to focus on so that when your mind starts to wander, you see the list, and you get back to work.
8. TAKE BREAKS OFTEN
Before your day starts, plan when you can take breaks based on your meeting calendar, workload, and priorities. Limit some breaks to 15 minutes while something like lunch should be between 30- 60 minutes. This gives you time to chat, walk around, etc. Staying active is essential, lack of movement can be bad not just for your body but also your mind.
