In conceiving of these cups inspired by Arthur’s journal from Red Dead Redemption 2, my biggest obstacle was figuring out how to do justice to the sketches I wanted to reproduce on the back of the cups. I’ve never liked the results I got from commercial underglaze pencils, but I had seen the ceramic crayons made by Stone’s Handmade on insta so I decided to give them a whirl.
The cups in the first picture haven’t been glaze fired yet, but the final fired result of the crayons is on the test tile in the second picture. The right side of the tile has a clear glaze over it, which I think softens and lightens the lines in a really nice way. Stone is a ceramic artist who developed and makes these crayons themself (along with a line of ceramic colored pencils AND ceramic oil pastels!), so I love being able to support other artists!
These two cups are the test/proof of concept, and I definitely learned a lot of things I’ll adjust next time for the first real batch of these (which are already in process). But! I’m so excited about how they’re coming together...
