for future reference, if you are getting the bullshit ‘lost connection to rendering device!’ warning when OVERWATCH crashes, the following worked for me and my NVIDIA graphics card:
step 1) swear violently
step 2) threaten a god
step 3) Install the NVIDIA GeForce experience thing that checks for updates
step 4) check for new DRIVER updates and download
step 5) Crucial - when you download it, it will ask you to choose between Express Installation, or Custom Installation.
CHOOSE CUSTOM.
step 6) In CUSTOM INSTALLATION, choose CLEAN INSTALLATION
This removes the previous versions which may have bullshit clunky code floating about, and installs the newest version

I have been playing all night so far, after this, and it has not happened again in this time. Which it normally would have about 0.03 seconds in.
So, maybe a fix? Best I got.
