Ceremonial Maya Stone Metate North Coastal Honduras Postclassic, circa AD 800 - 1100
Tulum II
El Castillo, Chichen Itza, Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán State, Mexico,
El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan (or sometimes Kukulkan), is a Mesoamerican step-pyramid that dominates the center of the Chichen Itza archaeological site in the Mexican state of Yucatán. The structure is 24 m (79 ft) high, plus an additional 6 m (20 ft) for the temple. Mesoamerican cultures periodically superimposed larger structures over older ones, and the Temple of Kukulcan is one such example.
Chichen Itza was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya people of the Terminal Classic period. The archaeological site was a major focal point in the Northern Maya Lowlands from the Late Classic (c. AD 600–900) through the Terminal Classic (c. AD 800–900) and into the early portion of the Postclassic period (c. AD 900–1200).Â
