i know that its because of racism + classism + oppression of children + a myriad of other factors but its crazy and completely fucking transparent to me that people act like cities are bad places to raise children and that everyone needs to go move to the suburbs to have their little nuclear families when cities allow children to have actual mobility on their own (public transit, sidewalks, bike paths) and thus a greater degree of independence rather than needing to be driven around everywhere, esp when they reach their teens, and also just to be exposed to all different kinds of people & experiences & to be constantly learning. but of course its not contradictory at all because the kinds of people who think that cities are unsuitable for children care more about control than actual well-being

the only change people seem to be okay with characters going through is like, whatever they consider the acceptable amount to be found in a neatly defined arc, some hero's journey shit with a packaged up return to the status quo at the end. nothings fundamentally different. which is why people cant handle it when characters dont have linear growth, or when they seem like theyre doing better and then they get worse and completely backslide, or just go in a direction thats unexpected. and its why ppl are especially so allergic to characters going through the process of unpacking their gender and transitioning onscreen. it almost mirrors the classic transphobic parent "youre taking away my son/daughter" thing. because it turns out you didnt fully know this person in the way you assumed that you could. but they still are the same person. can you accept that?

i wont lie it is somewhat exhausting seeing continued even if not intended sentiment that being nonbinary is simply trans lite or is only a stepping stone to being a trans man or a trans woman

at a certain point also if you are going to be talking about delicate subjects to a large public audience you do need to learn how to communicate clearly and effectively (a skill that can be learned) like theres obviously no way to ensure that people won't just willfully misconstrue whatever youre trying to say but an effort can and should be made
