Turning pennies into silver and gold- just one more neat trick our students learned this summer. A fun experiment with zinc granules and sodium hydroxide- after carefully cleaning the pennies, the coins are dropped into the heated zinc/sodium hydroxide solution. This ‘galvanizes’ the copper in the penny and deposits a layer of zinc on the surface giving it the silver color. Heating the ‘silver ‘ penny over a flame fuses the copper and zinc and produces the alloy brass, giving the coin a gold hue. Another 'enriching' science experience...
