She disappears shortly after they finish unpacking for the week. Not without saying anything - she doesnāt do that anymore, withdraw into herself and refuse to let him in - so he isnāt worried or offended, instead leans down to accept her kiss on his cheek when she says sheāll be outside.
When heād pulled up to the cabin just shy of a year ago, he hadnāt known what to expect. All heād known was that sheād said sheād call and she didnāt.
They spent that first week talking and arguing and sitting in silence, but came out the other side in a better place, having worked through things that had gone unsaid up until then. They really are better when they use their words, he told her at one point. He went to the cabin twice more that summer, and by the end of it, theyād decided to see what they could be. She still had healing to do, they both did, but they worked through what they needed to, standing at each otherās sides the whole way.
And now, a year later, he has a ring in his suitcase, more convinced than ever that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. He just hopes that she feels the same way.
He spots her on the pier, splayed out on her back, but he canāt tell if her eyes are open or not. She tilts her head in acknowledgment when he approaches, and he lays down next to her, grins when she curls up at his side.
āI can think of a more comfortable place for a nap,ā he teases, draping his arm around her shoulders and holding her close.
She chuckles and presses her lips to his flannel-covered chest.Ā āWasnāt napping,ā she murmurs.Ā āJust thinking.ā
āYeah?ā
āYeah.ā She props her head on her hand and looks down on him.Ā āIām really glad my dad called you last summer, invited you up here. God knows I was too stupid to do it myself.ā
He reaches up and brushes his finger along her jaw.Ā āNot stupid. Healing.ā He brings her head down to him, moans when she deepens the kiss.Ā āI love you,ā he whispers when she pulls away.
She brushes her lips against his again.Ā āLove you too. Wanna go inside?ā
He laughs and lets her pull him up, and they run back to the cabin just as the first raindrops fall.

She fucked up.
And the Heavens sought to reiterate this by choosing todayāof all daysāto unleash a mutinous downpour.
Thanks, she snarked upwards. Youāre hilarious, a real class act.
But even that was half-hearted, for she knew that at the end of the dayā
She had no one to blame but herself.
Lucifer executed his promise to give her space, and she internally vowed not to let the gap between them yawn to a chasm too discordant to bridge.
Except days turned into weeks turned into a month; as the hours stretchedāso did her fears.
Not of him⦠never him.
No, Chloe was afraid of herselfāof the magnitude with which his revelation did nothing to alter her truth.
She loved him.
With every beat of her battered, human heartāshe loved him.
And therein lay the problem.
What could she, a mere mortal, offer him? This divine creature ofāloathed he was to believe itāinimitable goodness and light.
That she could admit to herself just how fucked she made the situation only proved how weak she was.
Because more than anything, she was afraid to lose him.
Now thanks to that weakness, the causatum of her worst nightmares was unfolding.
Unless she made it in time.
āLucifer!ā she called just as his wings flared behind him, the feathered appendages soaked but gleaming against the gloom of the twilight deluge.
āDetective?ā
She hardly registered the angry pelt of cloudburst against her skin as she stepped onto the balcony and into his gravity.
āIām sorry,ā she cried. āI shouldnāt have avoided you for so long and youāā she clutched desperately at the lapels of his jacket. āYou donāt have to hide, not from me. And I shouldāve told you sooner and now Iām too late because youāre leavingāā
āBut Iāmā¦ā he shook his head bewilderingly. ānot⦠going⦠anywhereā¦?ā
She gaped. āYouāre not?ā
āGoodness, no. For better or for worse, Earth is my home. And there areāā he gave her a pointed look to which she blushed, āāthose I would rather endure the trials of humanity for than to ever be without.ā
He sniffed disdainfully.
āWhatever gave you that impression anyway?ā
āMazeāā
And there it was.
Her erstwhile roommate had been relentless in her pursuit of a forgiveness Chloe hadnāt been so forthcoming in bestowing. Yet she had to credit her perceptiveness despite the deceit, that the ultimate catalyst for reconciliation would be the threat of his permanent exodus.
āThat little demon,ā she murmured.
Though perhaps she was forgiven, after all.
āBut what are you doing out in the rain?ā
āOh,ā the euphoric shine christening his dark orbs and tinting his expression with effulgence was infectious. āBut I just love it! It was so dry in Hell that I canāt resist basking in it every time. Besides,ā he stretched his wings, āroomy as my bathroom is, itās still ill-equipped for any proper grooming so I took advantage of the torrent. If I ever forget how inconvenient these blasted things areāā
And so she remembersādown to the infinitesimal fibers of her soulāhow to love him.
Because it was Lucifer, and he had never been anything but who he wasāenough.
And even after her aberration, his gaze upon herāscaturient with a four-letter emotion she was sure they were well on their way to acknowledgingāremained unchanged, and this is how she knows.
She, too, was enough.
āSo, youāre staying?ā her grip on his jacket loosened, only to graze the strong slope of his shoulders.
He grinned crookedly, arms snaking around her waist.
āTill you desire otherwise.ā
āNot possible.ā
āSuppose,ā he hummed, breath a cold mist before him but his body deliciously warm pressed against her shivering figure, āIāll just have to live with that.ā
āHow awful,ā she teased hoarsely, knees weak with relief. āTo be stuck with me.ā
āAnd yet,ā he sighed, sealing what little abysm remained between them.
āI wouldnāt have it any other way.ā
AN:Ā I have... mixed feelings about this lmao. This was a whopping 1k in its genesis. Not for any plot reasons really, but just cause I love my flowery language XD So if the pacing is that tiny bit off, you know why.
Tbh, I'm more excited for the installment after this but that's for another day hahaha.
But how didĀ youĀ guys find it, is the better question.Ā Let me know! And if you have any requests, don't hesitate to hit me up here!
See you guys in the next one ;)
The Devilās Lucky Number series: I | II | III | IV | V | VI | VII | VIII | IX | X | XI | [ XII ]
It takes him a few moments to figure out what woke him. Heās been sleeping well this week, even without the noisy sounds of the city, in the eery quiet of the woods.
He almost lays back down, but he hears the noise again, what sounds like a quiet whimper.
Kate.
Heās out of bed in an instant, throws on his discarded flannel to ward off the nightās chill.
Her door is shut, so he raps his knuckles against it before opening it and steps inside. The room is pitch black, so he turns on his phoneās flashlight to get his bearings and avoid running into anything. Her bed is on the far wall, and he can just make out her shape under the covers, feels his heart break as she turns over again, obviously a nightmare if her actions are any indication.
He starts to move closer, but when he hears his name fall from her lips, he freezes. Is she dreaming about him? What if it isnāt a nightmare after all, but a different type of dream entirely?
When a painedĀ ānoā follows his name, though, he decides he can safely assume it is a nightmare, and he continues his approach.
He kneels next to the bed and sets his phone down, and he presses his palm on her arm.Ā āKate,ā he whispers, trying to wake her up.
She whimpers and shakes her head, her eyes tightly shut, her brows drawn in what he can only describe as panic or despair.Ā āCastle,ā she repeats,Ā āRick, no. Come back.ā
He shakes her, then, panic starting to overtake him as he repeats her name, saying it louder every time until she finally jerks awake, sitting up, her chest heaving with shaky breaths. His hand falls to the bed, but he doesnāt move it far.
She turns her head towards him, and even in the shadows cast by his phoneās flashlight, he can see her eyes focus, the recognition when she sees that itās him.Ā āRick?ā she whispers, her voice cracking. Her hand comes up to his chest, and she grips his flannel, exhales a shaky sigh before throwing her arms around his neck.Ā āI thought-ā
He feels her hand cup the back of his head, and he takes a chance and joins her on the bed, not breaking their hug.Ā āIām here,ā he rasps, tightening his arms when she shifts towards him and buries her face in his neck.Ā āIām not going anywhere.ā
Itās been a hard week, in more ways than one - physically, mentally, emotionally - but theyāve come out the other end of it stronger than before.
At least, he hopes they have.
Dread sits heavy in his chest as he packs his bag, intending to leave first thing in the morning. A sadness has come over the cabin, descending like a wet blanket, slowing her limbs and making them both cranky.
Heās so caught up in his thoughts that he doesnāt realize the cabin is silent until he zips his bag. He doesnāt start to panic until he calls out for her and receives nothing in response; sheās regaining her strength, but she has a tendency to push herself too far, and heās had to practically order her to sit and rest more times than he can count. The last thing he wants is to find her in an unconscious heap because sheās too stubborn to stop.
He relaxes when he looks out the front window and spots the back of her head, and he grabs his jacket and goes out to join her.
A tilt of her head is the only indication she gives that she hears him, and he drops himself in the chair next to her, scoots closer to her.
āI donāt want you to go,ā she whispers, almost inaudible even in the still environment.
He glances at her, surprised to see her gaze locked on him, gold and green and gorgeous.Ā āIāll be back in a few weeks,ā he reminds her, referencing the schedule he and Jim have planned.Ā āBarely enough time to miss me.ā
She offers him a small smile.Ā āIāll miss you,ā she admits.
āIāve been waiting years to hear you say that,ā he teases. He looks down at her hand, her palm facing up, and he takes a chance and takes her hand with his. When she doesnāt pull away or protest, he lifts their joined hands and brushes his lips across her knuckles.
āWeāre okay?ā she murmurs, her cheeks flushing.
Fic prompt: Beckett invites Castle out to her dads cabin at some point during her recovery š

ARRIVAL: THE CABIN SERIES PART 1
Post-3x24
He didn't know what to expect when he arrived at the cabin, but it wasn't her sitting in a rocking chair with a blanket draped over her lap. He knew she wouldn't be running marathons - not that she ever has, to his knowledge, but that's not the point - but her skin is still pale, deep circles under her eyes, and when she stands to greet him, he can see how skinny she is, how much weight she's lost in the six weeks since she was shot.
She spent a month at home, he knows, having kept in touch with her dad despite the complete lack of contact from her. He doesn't know why she came up here, almost in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees and animals and not much of anything else.
He did pass a few other cabins on the long dirt road, but he couldn't tell if they were occupied. So, when her dad runs into town - or returns to the city for a few days, like he's done this week - she's alone.
As he pulls to a stop in the flat gravel and gazes up at the modest cabin, he takes a deep, steadying breath before shutting off the ignition and opening the door.
As Jim had predicted, she doesn't appear, but when he wanders up onto the wrap-around porch and makes his way toward the back, he spots her.
She'd obviously heard him, moves to stand when he comes into view, a small, timid smile appearing on her lips.
"Hi, Castle," she whispers, barely audible, but music to his ears.

As promised, he stays out of her way. He has edits to work on anyway - changing the ending of a book will do that - so he takes his laptop to the couch, out of the way but still accessible if she needs help.
He canāt concentrate, though, not when he sees Kate cross the hallways with a towel in her hand, or when he hears the shower turn on, or when she emerges several minutes later wearing a robe, her damp hair loose around her shoulders. He hears her bedroom door click shut behind her, and he turns his attention back to his work.
He doesnāt intend to fall asleep, but when he obviously does, because he opens his eyes to see her fully dressed and standing in front of him, a mug in each hand.
āCome with me?ā she asks, holding out one of the mugs.
He sighs and scrapes his hand down his face as he thinks. Either sheās going to snap at him again, tell him to leave her alone, or apologize, and heās not sure heās up for hearing that he isnāt wanted. But he sets his laptop down and stands anyway, slips his shoes on as he follows her outside.
"Iām sorry,ā she breathes, sinking to a bench just outside of the front door.
He sits next to her, not sure what to say. She doesnāt apologize often - doesnāt have many reasons to - and when she does, itās usually with actions, like taking him to Remyās or a movie. So to say the words...
āI didnāt mean to suggest that you werenāt welcome here,ā she continues.Ā āYou are. I just hate being so dependent on others.ā
āI know.ā He nudges her knee with his.Ā āSo maybe Iām just visiting, and willing to offer my manly strength whenever you might need it. And maybe yell at you when you push yourself too far.ā
She snorts, but she turns towards him.Ā āI can accept that.ā
Rick sighs and shuts the book heās barely reading, throws it next to him on the couch. Heād picked up the book of poetry on a whim; he prefers prose and complete sentences, but he knows that Kate reads it on occasion, and heād been drawn to this book, felt Kateās presence in every page.
But this one...this one hits hard.
Sheās been gone for six weeks now, completely radio silent, shutting herself off even from Lanie, Ryan, and Espo after sheād ungracefully dismissed him from the hospital. Heās been undeterred, though, investigating her shooting even after the new captain kicked him out, finishing his book in record time.
He runs frustrated fingers through his hair and stands, paces the familiar route through his living room as he tries to purge her from his mind.
Itās pointless.
Before he can stop himself, he retrieves the book, flips open to the last page he read, and snaps a picture of the five sentences that froze him in his tracks.
Another moment of indecision, and he pulls up their message thread, ignores the lack of responses from her - he hasnāt tried in five weeks, when it becomes apparent that she wasnāt going to answer - attaches the picture, and hits send.
Maybe sheāll reply, maybe she wonāt.
Heās just about to lose hope when the dots appear, and his heart soars when four words appear.

He was fine.
He repeated it with each line of cocaine he snorted and every bottle of alcohol he consumed.
I am fine, he told himself over and over. Till it was a burned mantra on his tongue and was a seared brand across his brain. It echoed along the hollow of his bones, and rushed through his veins as vital as his blood.
I am fine, he had scored onto his heart. I donāt need her.
āI donāt need anybody,ā he said though he could scarcely be heard over the din of music and the inebriated cacophony.
āDāyou hear that?ā he slurred, getting to his feet, jostling the man plastered to his side, name all ready forgotten. āI donāt need anybody!ā
āWhatās that, sweets?ā The man stood with him, all blond hair and blue eyes that reminded him of the one heād most rather forget, except his wavy tendrils were a touch too bleached, his ocean orbs a tad too dark. He trailed callused fingers down Luciferās torso and he startled at his unbuttoned dress shirt. When had that happened? Not that it mattered.
āGet out,ā he deadpanned and the other man laughed as if Lucifer had told the funniest joke. He cajoled.
āHave another drinkāā
āGet. out,ā he growled, face hard not just with anger but with restraint. He jerked from his grasp and bellowed to the crowd of anonymous, gyrating bodies in his penthouse, āAll of you, get out!ā
Wisely, someone cut the music, and it was with confusion that the sea of partygoers ebbed towards the exit. When they slunk too slow for his liking, he threw a bottle at his bar with a roar, then they couldnāt leave fast enough. Even Blondie got the message.
And he was alone.
Which was fine, as was his soundtrack for the evening and the ones past since⦠well, not like heād been counting.
(Nine days, twenty-one hours, thirty-two minutes and seventeen seconds)
He was just tense, thatās all. Would have fucked it away but no one had roused him enough to full mast.
Which was the whole bloody point, wasnāt it?
He was fine all on his own.
As if to prove it, he palmed at his cockāright there in the middle of his living roomāand thought of nothing at all.
Except the problem with thinking of nothing was it left room for everything to trickle in, things he had tried so hard to obliterateālike shared laughter, exasperated sighs and secret smiles, meaningful hands cosseting his cheeks as she whispered, not to me, her affection-tinted gaze fading into cold fear as she dully pronounced, itās all true.
He hadnāt realized he was crying till he wrenched his hand from his flaccid sex with a sob.
He dug his palms onto his eyes till he was inundated with flashes of phosphene and the tears stopped.
He was fine. He was fine, and heājust wanted it to stop.
He stalked to his balcony, shredded wings materializing behind him.
It would be so easy, he thought, to pitch himself over the railing and fall. He was so very good at it, see. He fell to Hell and scorched himself a kingdom. He fell for the detective, and it had kept her alive.
Too easy.
So he spread his wings, and let go.
The saddest part was he wouldnāt even die. He was falling in vain. Because he couldnāt die. Because his wings would catch him on instinct. No one would know, even if they hadnāt. No one would care.
Because he was on his own, would always be alone.
Lucifer?
He gasped, eyes shooting open at Chloeās prayer, her litany fighting its way through his howling musings.
Are you alright?
And after days of silence, she sounded strangely of salvation. So he finally allowed himself the truth that he had so painfully been denyingā
Iām not, he cried as he heaved himself upwards with his torn wings.
Iām not fine at all.
AN:Ā Yoooooo. I was trying to work on the pudding drabble but Billie's song has been on a loop in my head all day and I guess my brain decided we were too happy LOL. But in all fairness, the song is very, very angsty deckerstar material.
Anyway, I love Billie. Watch her in the Coachella livestream tomorrow XDIf you have any requests, hit me up!
And uh... hope you enjoyed this hahaha.
