Fluff, post upright ending, AU(ish), canon compliant.
Lucio and his lover enjoy a quiet afternoon together, playing two truths and a lie.
You can see some pictures of my OC Erwin here and here, many thanks to @pharry for them!! They are wonderful <3
As said above, this ficlet takes place post (upright) ending, but I must precise that my version of Lucio's upright ending is a bit different, before he can go back to becoming a mercenary, he has some services to the community to do like helping to rebuild Vesuvia among other things.
As for Erwin, he is not the apprentice, he is an OC with a different story, the Apprentice/MC would be Niamh who is only mentioned here.
AO3 version
Enjoy!
The couple was sitting in the shade of a tree in silence, the head captain had spread his cape on the ground so his significant other would not (complain) sully his clothes. The weather was lovely and the silence had been comfortable until now, a tension was slowly building up.
As much as he loved his lover’s talent for crafting, today it was frustrating. Lucio grumbled at the sight of Erwin being entirely focused on his work -whatever it was- instead of him. While Erwin’s features were always pleasant to look at and watching him carving could be soothing (those eyes!...), now it was getting boring. He couldn’t even lean against him or wrap his arms around his neck, it would disrupt the other (and he would get scolded again)…
Or he could try something else.
“Erwin, my captain~” he cooed, drawing nearer. He only received a soft hum in answer, well, at least he was not being ignored. “How about you put this aside for a moment?”
Lucio tried to grasp the piece of metal his lover had been working on this whole time, but Erwin raised it out of his reach. However, the Count took the opportunity to lay down on his laps, a smug smile on his face.
“Lucio” the warrior sighed. “You know I cannot caress your hair and finish this at the same time, right?”
“I’m sure you can find a solution.” Lucio answered as he shifted his position to be more comfortable. He tapped his metallic fingers on the other’s thigh, waiting. Only to puff in indignation when he realized Erwin favoured his damn piece of whatever metal.
“Careful, pup, I have a sharp clamp in hand.” The nickname only infuriated Lucio more, but Erwin pushed him back into his laps before he could bounce back in fury. Lucio huffed but he stayed still – for about two minutes - before blurting out:
“I’m bored! It’s been a while since we spent time together and all you care about is your blasted whatsit!”
“A while?” Erwin snorted. “Does yesterday night count for nothing?”
“…it’s not the same.” The ex-Count pouted.
“How about we play truth or dare?”
Lucio’s eyes widened at the proposition; usually, he was the one to suggest it! A smile spread on his face, then he frowned.
“You’re going to dare me to stay silent and motionless, aren’t you?” his claws scratched softly the soldier’s leg in warning.
“I am not dumb.”
The accusation while unsaid was not missed. That made Erwin pause in his crafting, and his fingers soon ran gently through his lover’s blonde hair.
“Of course not.” He assured softly, trying to catch Lucio’s eyes. “But you have a point, dares are not really an option at the moment. So how about we play two truths and a lie?” the former Count looked up at that, raising an eyebrow in question. “Each in turn, one of us states two truths and a lie about himself, and the other has to guess which ones are true and which one is the lie. It doesn’t have to anything huge or too intimate, though, it can be about anything.”
Lucio hummed, pretending to think about it a moment before agreeing.
“Alright, I’ll start then.” he shifted to lie on his back, his head still in Erwin’s laps, and clasped his hands together on his stomach. “Since I was a kid, my favourite flowers were always white. I defeated a Lich with a luth before we met, as a mercenary. And… I want you to pet my hair!”
Erwin chuckled at the last statement.
“The last one is true, of that I am sure.” His calloused fingers ran through Lucio’s hair, much to the latter’s delight. “About the first… I am hesitating. Kids tend to change their mind very quickly, and you grew up in a land with a very long winter and a lot of snow.” The blonde man purred as he kept caressing his hair, a wry smile on his lips. “However, I fail to see how you could have defeated a Lich with a luth… Unless you played it so bad it-“
“HEY! Watch what you’re gonna say!” Lucio protested, slapping the black-haired man’s chest. But it only amused Erwin more, who were now laughing openly.
“And if you sang along with it-“
“Why you!!”
A second later, Erwin was pushed back on the grass, his lover straddling him and staring at him hungrily.
“You should know better than to poke at the wolf, dear Erwin.” Lucio licked his bottom lips, his cheeks reddening. “Do you want me to eat you right there?”
“You? A wolf?” the captain smirked. “Not the canid that comes to mind when I see you!”
Before the blonde could retort or move, Erwin seized him by his waist and overturned him. Lucio groaned as he was pinned on his back but any more complaints were quickly muffled by his beloved’s lips. The latter was kissing him with an unexpected passion, like he was about to make love to him right there, right now. An excited shudder ran through his body at the thought. However, the moment he slid a hand under his lover’s shirt, they heard barks coming in their direction. They had barely pulled away from each other that Mercedes and Melchior pounced on them, and in a blink, the dogs claimed all of their attention, licking and nuzzling them. The two lovers laughed, petting the two demanding pets. Lucio could not get mad at them for ruining the mood, neither could Erwin from what he could see, he seemed very happy to rub Melchior’s belly (to the latter’s delight). Mercedes was settling on his knees when Erwin spoke up again.
“The lie is that your favourite flowers have always been of the colour white. Am I right?”
Lucio blinked and remembered what they had been doing ten minutes ago; he felt his cheeks warming both in embarrassment at his own forgetfulness, and of joy, for Erwin got the right answer.
“Yeah, you’re right.” He answered, not able to stop grinning. “I liked white flowers, but I used to like more colourful ones better as a kid, especially red or yellow ones.”
“Red and gold. Some things don’t change much.” Erwin chuckled, wrapping an arm around the blonde’s waist to pull him closer. He laid a kiss on his forehead before asking. “Now, how about you tell me how you managed to defeat that Lich with a luth?”
“The luth was not just any old luth, it was possessed by a spiteful spirit that I managed to grab on a previous mission. It would be too long to tell all the details about it, that will be a story for another time. Anyway, when I had to stop the Lich, I blind sighted it and hit it with the luth, breaking it. The bastard started mocking me, until its body began twisting around like some grotesque puppet and being tossed around. It was quite gross. Especially when the spirit left in a small tornado, it was impressive to watch, but it also splattered what was left of the Lich all around, ew.” Lucio related, grimacing. Then he pinched playfully the brunette’s cheek with his right hand. “Nothing to do with my talent in music, cap’! Now it’s your turn!”
Erwin smirked as he rubbed slightly his now slightly red cheek. He sat more comfortably, holding Lucio close to him with the two white dogs settled on each of them, then stated:
“First: while I am good with a bow, I am a disaster with a crossbow.”
Lucio snorted at that, remembering the time Erwin accidently broke a mechanical box Nadia had just finished and went to show them. His ex-wife’s horrified expression and Erwin’s utterly embarrassed reaction – as if he had been wishing the floor would swallow him, he had almost died of laughter that day. However, as much of a mechanic wrecker his dear captain was, Lucio doubted he couldn’t use a crossbow at all.
“Second, I don’t like riding that much.”
…Okay, that was such a blatant lie that the blonde man had to hold himself back hard not to call him out immediately.
“Third, my favourite storybook is Beowulf.”
“The lie is the second one!” Lucio blurted out, almost vexed at how easy it was. “You broke down into tears after your previous horse, Wildfire, was killed! And you love Fûjin!” he affirmed, pointing at the horse in question, grazing a bit further. The gray mare and her companion (Lucio’s horse, Raijin) looked up at the sound of her name, both looked at them in curiosity a moment before they went back to eating.
“How do you know that?” Erwin stared at him, his blue eyes wide in surprise. “Did you see me?...”
Oh.
“I- yeah, I did. I saw you leaving the camp and got worried, so I followed you.” Lucio rubbed the back of his neck, avoiding his lover’s gaze. “I didn’t stay long- I mean, I didn’t mean to pry! It was the first time I saw you crying, so I was frozen in shock! But I quickly left, to give you space…”
“What made you so sure that I was crying for Wildfire and not another reason?” Erwin asked after a short silence.
“You always took great care of him, better than most of our fellows and anyone I’ve ever seen… I could understand the pain of losing a pet, or rather an animal you cared for so much. Among other things, I noticed some details here and there, and your reaction when he got killed…”
Lucio stopped and risked a glance at Erwin, but the latter wasn’t looking at him. He was silently caressing Melchior’s fur, deep in thoughts. The blonde started feeling anxious, fearing he had just re-opened an old wound; instead of risking goofing up more by comforting him with words, he chose to put a comforting hand on Erwin’s shoulder, still a bit unsure. When the latter looked back at him, he was surprised to see him smiling.
“You are quite a good observer, when you want to.” Erwin said softly, his tone slightly teasing.
Lucio huffed in fake annoyance whilst snuggling against his lover, who wrapped his arms around him again to hold him tight. They hugged in silence a moment and shared a quick kiss before Mercedes decided she had been static long enough and ran towards the horses. Melchior glanced at his sister, but did not move from his spot. Mercedes ran back to the blonde man, a stick in her mouth.
“Wanna keep playing?” Lucio asked, throwing it away for his pet to fetch.
“Sure.” Erwin answered, resuming to his craftwork.
With the two sitting back to back, the game went on for a while, a peaceful atmosphere had settled as they kept on guessing when the other was lying, sharing some little facts about themselves or recalling some shared memories. Lucio was finishing his turn when Melchior got up and ran to join his sister, the two dogs struggled playfully to get their hold on the stick under their master’s amused gaze.
“Sorry, but I doubt you read such a book.” The blonde could virtually hear Erwin’s smile. “I bet whatever you want that, if you ever tried to read it, you would put it asides after three, five pages at most.”
He felt his lover stiffen a second before resuming what he was doing as if nothing was amiss. Lucio snickered when he heard him muttering “these sell-outs!”.
“But yeah, you’re right anyway. I am not one to sit and read that 1000 pages brick!”
Erwin snorted. “I knew it. But about those negotiations, did you really do that? And Nadia allowed it?”
“With the Pommergonds? Well, it’s not like she had many choices, I was the only one around who could understand their brogue and knew how they worked.” Lucio laughed. “She, Jules and the others were completely overwhelmed, they had no idea what they wanted before Nadia called for me. And Pommergonds don’t like people who pussyfoot around or put on airs, so once they explained me what they wanted and Nadia told me she agreed with their terms, I just grabbed the feather and paper and made them sign the treaty. End of the story.”
“She and Julian must not have appreciated the initiative though.” Erwin laughed with him.
“They ranted a bit, but when the Pommergonds invited us for their banquet and left with their troops the following day, they couldn’t say I didn’t do well!”
“I remember the banquet. It was very nice. Many were surprised to learn you were the negotiator afterwards.”
“Ha! They must have expected me to brag about it too, but honestly, it wasn’t that extraordinary.”
There was a pause, Lucio felt his lover moving.
“I am so proud of you, Lucio. You’ve come so far, I don’t think you realize that.”
Taken aback by this statement, the blonde turned around, speechless. Erwin was looking at him, and his gaze was so intense, so full of warmth tenderness, he felt himself melt under it. A smile – a stupid looking one, he was sure of it – spreaded on his lips as he averted his eyes, feeling suddenly shy under such loving eyes.
“What is that going to be?” he asked, pointing at the piece of metal, his voice coming out more loudly and high-pitched than he would have liked.
“A pendant.” The black-haired man answered, his voice sending shivers to Lucio’s body. “When I am done with it, it will be for you. Do not ask for more details, please, it was supposed to be a surprise.”
The blush on the ex-Count’s cheeks became brighter. Part of him wanted to pull himself together and tease his lover by pressing more questions about it, but he found he just couldn’t. His heart was beating fast, so full of warmth he was almost afraid it would burn.
He felt so loved.
It felt so good.
“I love you.”
Lucio glanced up at Erwin, who bent to kiss his forehead.
“I have loved you for years.”
A kiss on the cheek.
“I will always love you.”
The soldier gently cupped his face and kissed him on the lips.
“Where is the lie?” Lucio whispered when they parted.
“There is no lie there.”
The two kissed for what felt like an eternity, drawing back only to take a breath and kiss again. The world around them had disappeared, it was just the two of them now.
But the world was rude and had a strange sense of humour.
Before the two lovebirds could relish more the moment, the screech of a parrot shrilled the silence.
“Come back! Come back!” Camio screamed, flying in circle above them. “Buggers are calling!”
“…did you train Camio to call Nadia and the master builder that?” Erwin raised an eyebrow at the blonde.
“No. Camio just knows how to read the mood and is very lucid!” Lucio retorted crossly. “I guess the fun is over for today.”
The white parrot went to his master’s shoulder, demanding to be pet. Lucio indulged him before getting up with an annoyed sigh. Usually, he didn’t mind the rebuilding work so much, but having such an intimate moment with his beloved interrupted got on his nerves. Erwin put his things back into his bag before getting on his feet too.
“Join me again tonight, I won’t be able to sleep without you at my sides.” The black-haired warrior whispered in Lucio’s ear as he caressed Camio’s feathers.
Grinning again, Lucio gave him a last peck on the cheek, then he rushed towards his mare, whistling for Mercedes and Melchior at the same time.
“First one to arrive gets to tie the other to the bed!” he proclaimed, hopping on Raijin’s saddle.
Erwin had barely done the same that Lucio was bursting into a gallop, so he quickly did the same. Side by side, the two rushed back towards, their smiles full of promises.
