Just wrote a Post Mortem for the first game I ever made.
In case any of you don't know, a Post Mortem (in terms of Video Games) is an essay written by a developer of a game on what went right and what went wrong during the development of the game. Occasionally, there will also be a section dedicated to figuring out what can be done to alleviate issues for the next game as well, but not always. It's a way to examine a work after it's been finished and I finally did one! Hooray!
Phew. I'm really happy to have written that, now that it's out. Might post it later, if anyone's interested in reading about what did and didn't work in the development of a game that's probably not available to be downloaded (maybe I could get my partner on that game to give me a download link? who knows).
Zombie nightmares
So i'm standing in front of the mirror, flossing my teeth, thinking about horror films, wondering if someone is going to appear behind me, and kill me. At that precise moment - nothing happens. Such is the anti - climactic paranoia from years of hiding behind my hands and catching just enough glimpses of horror films to know they have ruined me forever.
It's not just a perfectly good session of dental hygeine that has been ruined by idle thoughts of dramatic death. I can recall many a time a heightened sense of panic has been induced by fictional memories from my relationship with cinema. Being left alone in a room with a naked, goggle eyed corpse for what felt like an eternity brought every chase scene i'd ever witnessed back to my mind in vivid playback, this time with me as the token sprinter. A hilarious thought with my asthma - i'd be better off just standing there and being quickly extinguished rather than having an asthma attack before I die.
I think I thought surviving the experience of watching two post mortems without becoming dinner for flesh eating monsters would cure me somewhat of this problem I have with the horror genre. I think the issue is, the first times I watched horror films I didn't cover my face. I forced myself to watch them. Not for peer pressure or anything like that. Because I naievely decided I could desensitise myself to them, and not be such a chicken.
I didn't realise how many people are excited by the prospect of a zombie apocalypse, until this recent outbreak of people eating each others' faces in the US, and excited discussion between my friends of how they would love it! Nutters. Well, if the world is gunna go all Walking Dead, you can find me in a bunker in the South of Ireland (surely one of the last places to be invaded by flesh eating monsters), eating sweets and watching re-runs of Peep Show until the whole nasty situation has blown over and I have an entirely empty world all to myself.
