they claim that your account has been put into "lurker mode" which means that your posts will not be seen by others (which is literally the worst lie ever, i saw this buried under several other notifs of people interacting with my posts) and that you need to go to the link on the post to sort it out

idk what the scam here is, likely fishing for your info, but just dont click it. that's their only post and they're tagging so many people in the comments

Think I caught a scam going around, and this one is a super weird one. So first I get a really nice comment from a guest account.

I replied to it, and I get this reply

I am sharing screenshots from the emails I received from ao3 about the comments because here is the bizarre thing: this comment thread is no longer visible on the fic or in my inbox. I didn't delete it or anything, I contacted ao3 support thinking it was a glitch.

As of right now ao3 is still down so I can't go and see if that is still the case.

But I am still getting replies from this guest account

So I send them a friend request on discord, they message me with this

Mmm, I'm starting to think at this point that something's up. I clicked the link (probably shouldn't have done that tbh but I have really good virus protection) and the profile looks legit. The art has signatures and stuff on it. Honestly I am not good enough at detecting AI art to say whether or not this stuff is real (though nothing is older than 6 days).

They try to get me to make a commission which??? Never said anything about that in their comments. They made it sound like they had fanart for me to see already? This is a sales pitch.

I tried not to be rude and unfriended them.

But here's what's double spooky. Earlier today I received this text message

Seems like regular spam, but the first name Evelyn is the same and I am officially super skeeved out. How did they get my number? I haven't connected it to my ao3 or my discord account.

So uh... anyone else who follow me or know this have this too?

Yesterday evening I got a message from @valiantlyelasticflux who apparently got scammed by someone who was pretending to be me. They insisted on me contacting olivergriff_02 on discord to tell him it was a mistake report.

First off, is this how things work on tumblr? The person whose account is at risk of getting deleted has to contact a tumblr safety member??

This is very suspicious because if you look at @valiantlyelasticflux they have reblogged a bunch of posts on May 11. alone and this account was high likely just created on the same day.

And I don't want to question tumblr's authority here (or whatever you call it) but am I in the wrong for not wanting to trust someone who is supposedly part of tumblr safety and has been on discord for only a month? olivergriff_02 has been on discord since April 10. 2026. I could be in the wrong here and I apologize if I am but, i dunno... this just doesn't feel right.

I'm sorry if I'm coming across as paranoid or if I'm breaking any rules but this has never happened to me before.

Is this a bot? Is this a scam attempt? Should I be worried about my account?

Got this message @staff and was unsure if it was a scam, made a test post and looked it up while not signed in, and it showed up fine, so this "lurker mode" isn't actually enabled.

Also that link has the word "safety" misspelled??

Pretty sure this is a scam, but i know tumblr has been sniping blogs recently for the egregious crime of being queer, so I would like some advice if anyone can even see this post.

Are they gonna deactivate me if I don't verify my age? Or is this just another tumblr scam?
