(ft. past possessed!lance because reasons.)Â
(3k words)
Keith didn’t know what had just happened. He had no idea.
He didn’t know what had happened and he didn’t know what was happening now.
The other paladins were swirling around him, trying to get to Lance. Lance, who was standing right in front of him, hands clasped at Keith’s arms, blue eyes open wide. He looked like he didn’t know what was happening either.
“Lance, are you okay?” someone was asking, thought Keith wasn’t sure who it was. Maybe it was him.
“Paladins, stand back,” said Allura, making her way through the others and reaching their side. “It might be best to put you in a healing pod for a couple of vargas. Just to make sure you’re alright.”
Keith vaguely heard Lance reply that he was totally fine and didn’t need it, but all the others started to argue too, and in the end he complied and got in a pod.
——–
The next thing Keith aknowledged was Shiro’s hand on his shoulder after he had helped setting up Lance’s pod.
“How are you doing?” Shiro asked him.
“I’m fine,” he replied briskly, stepping slightly to the side to make Shiro’s hand fall from his shoulder. He really didn’t need extra weight, there.
Shiro had the common sense of letting the matter go, and asked instead, “What happened?”
Ah, what happened? Nice question.
“Yeah, man,” chimed in Hunk, walking towards them.
“It was insane!” exclaimed Pidge, jumping up from her spot on the floor and bolt to where they were now all standing. “One minute you’re all, like, screaming for help cause Lance’s trying to kill you and the next radio silence and when we get to you everything’s fine? What happened?”
“He was…”
“Was he possessed?” asked Pidge, not letting him finish.
“Yes, something like that.”
“Man. How did you manage to get him back?” asked Hunk.
“I… don’t know.”
He knew perfectly well. He just couldn’t admit it to himself. He was pretending to not remember it. To still need time to figure out what had happened. To grasp the knowledge of what he had done. To wrap his brain around it.
“This is insane,” said Pidge for the second time.
“What did you do, Keith?” they asked again. And again and again and again. For a couple of minutes, that question was all Keith could hear. What did you do? What? What what what could you possibly have done to save him? What did you do? What did you say? What did you do to make him wake up? What have you done?
What, Keith?
What?
He could feel his heart beat against his ribcage as if it wanted to break free, to burst out and tell everyone itself, what Keith had done.
His palms were sweaty and he didn’t know if it was for the fight or for the panic that was now in full bloom in his chest.
Shiro rested his hand on Keith’s shoulder again and he jumped, even if he didn’t mean to, letting the helmet he had taken off earlier and was still holding in his hands fall to the ground.
“Hey, are you sure you’re okay?” asked Hunk, concern palpable in his every word.
Keith looked frantically at the three set of eyes that were staring at him, asking, relentlessly, what have you done? What, Keith, what?
“I kissed him!” Keith blurted, eyes wide and arms raised as if someone was aiming a gun at him.
“You what?” asked Pidge.
“I kissed him,” Keith repeated, letting the sentence settle in the air between them and in his own conscience.
“Why?”
Well. “I don’t know!” he said, raising his voice, suddenly angry. He didn’t know what he was angry about or who he was angry with. “I just did! And it worked, so let it be, okay?!”
“Wh—”
“Leave me alone!” he shouted, even if he didn’t really want to be left alone. He was kind of scared of his own thoughts. Still, he stormed out of the healing pod chamber and rushed through the castle’s corridors to his room.
He locked himself inside and fell down face first on his bed.
He just needed to sleep it off, that was it. He was going bananas because he was tired. Not because he had kissed Lance. Not at all.
He pushed his face harder against his pillow.
Everything would have made more sense in the morning. He just needed to sleep it off.
 ——–
Problem was, it’s hard to fall asleep when you have a lot on your mind. And when you still haven’t changed out of your paladin suit. Man, that thing was crazy unconfortable to sleep in. The edges of the chest plate were digging in his skin. He wanted to stand up and get it off, but couldn’t bring himself to move.
After who knows how much time of silent and motionless pondering of his life choices, Keith managed to roll out of the bed on the floor. That was progress.
Someone knocked on his door and it opened before he had time to sit up or call don’t come in.
He thought he had locked it when he had come in. Apparently he hadn’t, since Lance was now standing in his doorframe, eyebrows pulled together in a confused frown.
“Why are you on the floor?”
“I was exercising,” said Keith, pulling himself upright by abs alone with an effort that betrayed his lie.
Lance was kind enough to not comment on his athleticism.
“What do you want?” Ugh. That came out super rude. What was wrong with him?
“I… nothing, just… I’ll just go.”
“No, Lance wait. Sorry, I didn’t mean…”
Lance looked… relieved? “Okay. I just wanted to talk, you know… about…”
Oh gosh, this was going to be one embarassing conversation.
“Sure,” Keith said, motioning for Lance to sit down on his bed.
“Why are you still wearing gear?”
“Oh. I forgot.”
“Uh. Okay.”
“Listen, about yesterday…” Keith started, unsure of what he was gonna say next. I’m sorry I kissed you? I didn’t mean to? It’s not like I’ve had a crush on you for months, it’s no big deal!
“Thank you,” Lance said.
“Uh? For… for what?”
“Ehm, for saving me? Or didn’t you?”
“Yes, I guess… You… don’t remember…?”
“No. Last thing I know I was running to get to the control room and the next I’m standing in front of you. I don’t remember anything else.”
“Oh! That’s…” that’s good, holy shit, he doesn’t remember it! We don’t have to talk about it!!
“The others told me you got me to wake up.”
“Did they?” Oh well, shit. They fucking told him.
“Yeah. But how did you do it?”
Oh. Oh no. No nonono no.
“Uh…”
“You know what? Just tell me everything that happened.”
“Everything?” asked Keith, sitting down next to him even if getting closer was the last thing he wanted. He just didn’t think he could stand upright for a minute longer.
“Yeah, everything that happened that I don’t remember.”
“Okay…”
Lance smiled happily and knocked off his shoes, propping his legs up on the bed and leaning his back against the wall.
“So, uh, you were possessed? And then i found you or you found me, and then you weren’t anymore.”
“…”
“…”
“Seriously?” Lance asked, one eyebrow raised. “That’s all you’ve got to say of this fantastic adventure we lived? Just, like, ten words?”
“Those were more like 18 words.”
“C’mon, man! You owe me at least a good story! Get your game going. Aren’t Galras supposed to be good at telling stories?”
“Who told you that?”
“I just made it up right now.”
Keith sighed. He wasn’t gonna get out of this. He should just try to make it as painless as possible. “Fine. But I’m only half Galra, so you can’t expect more than half good story.”
“As long as it’s half good and not half story it’s fine by me. I hate cliffhangers.”
“Okay, then. Let’s get started.”
——–
“So, Galra possession, that’s a thing, apparently. I don’t know why they got you, or how. Noone else is in the castle right now, so… it must have happened some time before. In a previous battle.”
“But… I never got injured or anything… how did they do it?”
“I don’t know. We don’t know. Not even Allura knows. It’s just… weird. And creepy.”
“What was I like? Was it like cool zombie or idiot zombie?”
“It was just like you but not.”
“So super cool, alright.”
“Lance…”
“Super cool but not too much because that’s how you realized it wasn’t really me, right.”
“Yeah, sure. And also, your eyes were yellow. And glowing. Without a pupil.”
“Ugh, gross.”
“And you were trying to kill me.”
“Well, that could have been me alright.”
“…”
“I’m kidding, go on.”
“Well, when I found you you were trying to destroy some mechanism in a hutch, I don’t know what that was, but I’m pretty sure if you actually destroyed that the castle would have been in trouble.”
“Maybe it was the particle barrier?”
“I don’t know, I was distracted, I didn’t see what you were doing.”
“Distracted, huh? By me?”
“You were fucking possessed, of course I was distracted by you!”
“Geez, no need to shout… go on.”
“Yes… I tried to ask you politely to step back and stop what you were doing, but you wouldn’t listen. So I kind of punched you.”
“Not on the face.”
“Yes, on the face. Where else was i supposed to—”
“Keith! This is World Heritage material!”
“Ugh. I know, I was panicking.”
“Yeah! Wait, you know? What—”
“Anyway, we sort of started to fight, you pulled out your bayard but it didn’t activate and that’s when I knew things were bad. And I was kinda ready to kill you.”
“You what?”
“I thought you were like a clone! A bad copy! How could I know you were possessed?”
“Oh my god, you tried to kill me! Wait, why didn’t you succeed? Was I that good at fighting?”
“No, I just… I couldn’t.”
“Because…?”
“Because I’d figured out it was you. You were still there, the body was yours.”
“How did you figure that out?”
“I don’t know… That thing that wasn’t you, whatever it was, seemed a little too happy about me trying to kill you. It was trying to rile me up. Make me angry. Saying bad things.”
“Like?”
“I don’t… it doesn’t matter. It was just clear it was trying to get me to kill you. And that’s when I figured that you must still be there and this thing’s plan was eliminating you through me. Making me kill you. So I just had to find a way to wake you up.”
“What did you do?”
“Uh…”
“Uh?”
“I… okay, don’t take this the wrong way…”
“Keith… what the hell did you do?”
“I…”
“Keith? You’re making me nervous…”
“I kissed you.”
 ——–
Lance stared at him for a time that seemed to stretch infinitely in Keith’s head, without saying a word.
“I’m sorry,” whispered Keith, when he could no longer bear the silence.
“You…” said Lance slowly, “Kissed… me.”
“Yeah,” breathed Keith.
“Kissed. Like, on the mouth.”
“Yes.”
Keith dared to raise his eyes and saw Lance looking at him with a deep frown and… was that a blush? Or was Keith just seeing things?
“Why?” asked Lance, not in a way that sounded like, why did you do this to me, more in a way that was genuine curiosity, it sounded like he really wanted to know how the idea had even crossed his mind.
“Well, I thought it was trying so bad to make me get angry at you, make me hate you, I though, let’s give him the opposite.”
“That’s… actually pretty smart.”
“Is it?”
“Yeah. Well, it worked, didn’t it?”
“Yeah…”
“Thank you. Again.”
“No problem.”
“So… how was it?” Lance asked, suddenly chipper, smiling widely and sitting straighter.
“Oh my God.”
“Oh, you liked it…”
“Lance, please, no. Don’t make it more awkward than it already is.”
“You like me.”
“Shut up.”
“I wouldn’t mind, you know?”
What did that even mean?!?! Keith was gonna punch him right in the face again if he didn’t stop right now.
“I’m kind of…” Lance started, but didn’t add anything after that.
“What?” asked Keith.
Lance looked kind of sad, now. Head low and hands clasped in his lap. “I’m bummed.”
“Why?”
“Because i don’t remember it.”
Sirens were blaring inside Keith’s head. What what what? What was that just now?
“You mean…”
“I wish I could remember it.”
“The… you want to remember the…”
“The kiss, yeah. It’s a shame.”
“Uh…”
Omg you idiot, just ask him if he wants to do it again, do it!!
“Can…” Lance started, then raised his eyes to meet Keith’s and damn. Damn, Keith was so gone. “Can you do it again?” he asked, voice barely more than a whisper. Â
“Yes,” breathed Keith, hands trembling slightly. He pushed them on the bed, and propped himself up and closer to Lance.
“Okay,” whispered Lance, leaning foward. He tapped his nose against Keith’s and he relished in the moment for a little while, before finally connecting their lips.
It was so so so much better than the first time. This… this was Lance. Not a weird possessed version of him. He was real, and he was Lance.
A happy sigh escaped his lips and he felt Lance smile against him.
“You like me,” he said.
“Shut up,” replied Keith, kissing him harder. Lance kissed back.
He was, he was kissing him back.
Keith could have died there and he would have been a happy man.Â
——–
“You do like me,” Lance said again. They were stll sitting on the bed, but Keith was now nestled against his side, head on his soulder, still placing little butterfly kisses on the skin above his collar.
“So? You like me too.”
“True.”
Keith looked up at him. “Since when?”
“Uh?” Lance giggled, playing with Keith’s hair, twirling his locks with his long fingers.
“When did you know you liked me? Was it just now?”
“Oh, boy, no.” Lance laughed again, leaning his head back on the wall and sighing. “Since the moment I saw your dumb mullet.”
“You mean… at the Garrison?!” Keith said, incredulous.
“Yep. You were so cool, man. I just… didn’t know it was a crush until… like a month ago? It was during a fight, i think… i don’t remember very well. I just… you made a cool move and I just. My brain shortcircuited. And it all downed on me.”
“Oh… I didn’t know you… liked boys, you know.”
“Oh, I do.”
“And… all the girls…?”
“I’m bi. I wasn’t pretending, I like them too.”
“Oh, right. Right.”
“What about you?”
“Uh?”
“When did you know you liked me?”
“Well, when you got out of a coma to shoot Sendak? I kind of… fell. Hard.”
“Woah. You even cradled me in your arms…”
“You remeber then! What the hell, dude!” Keith rose up and punched him in the shoulder.
“Ow, no, i don’t remember!”
“Stop lying!” he punched him again, and Lance this time grabbed his wrist and pulled him down again, smashing their lips together.
“Do the others know?” Lance whispered, face only centimeters away from Keith’s, holding it with his hands.
“I… yeah, I mean, I told them I kissed you to get you to wake up. They were kind of making me crazy with questions. But… no one knows that I like you. I haven’t told anyone.”
“Oh, okay…”
“Did you?”
“What?”
“Tell someone that you… liked me?”
“Yeah…”
“Really? Who? Hunk?”
“What? No! I told Shiro.”
“What?! Why would you tell Shiro?!”
“I was very confused! I just… needed to tell someone. And he’s our capitain!”
“Yeah, but… I mean, Hunk’s your best friend…”
“Yes, but… I was scared, okay? I was just scared. I thought Shiro was the less likely to disown me if I came out to him.”
“I don’t think Hunk would disown you, Lance…”
“I know, but still. I don’t want to lose him. I can’t risk it over something so… trivial.”
“You could have told me.”
“No way! Are you crazy? I can’t come out like that to the guy I have a crush on! That’s embarassing.”
“What about Coran? You two are tight.”
“He’s like my dad. That’s even more embarassing. Also, don’t say Pidge, cause she’s a girl and that’s just super embarassing. And don’t mention Allura either because I flirted with her, so like, ten times more embarassing still.”
“Okay, so Shiro was like the only available option.”
“Yeah, kinda.”
“Was he cool about it?”
“Yeah, super chill. Plus, he accidentally told me a secret of his, so now I have him in my pocket. I have power over him,” he said, a mischievous grin spreading on his face.
“What secret?”
Lance seemed to ponder for a second if he should tell him or not. “Alright, I’ll tell you. He just said not to tell Allura, so…”
“Wait.”
“Yeah, he’s got a crush on Allura.”
“No, no way.”
“He totally does.”
“Oh my god.”
“Don’t tell anyone I told you that.”
“Okay… damn.”
“I know right?”
They laughed and Keith lied his head down on Lance’s shoulder again.
“What do you want to do about this?” Lance asked him, raising his hand again to twirl his hair.
“I don’t care, I mean. If you want to tell them I’m fine. If you don’t, I’m fine with that too.”
“Okay.”
“What do you want?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“It’s fine. We have time.”
“Yeah. Hey.” Lance moved his hand under his jaw and raised his head again. “Kiss me again, please?”
Keith smiled.
“I want to make sure i won’t ever forget it.”
“Okay,” Keith whispered, more than happy to oblige, before connecting their lips once again.
He wasn’t gonna get tired of this anytime soon.
