...that when the Portugese were trading with Japan they engaged in a slavery trade. Some people sold themselves into slavery or sold their children into slavery to escape poverty. Some people were sold into slavery as a consequence of feudal warfare. It was unclear to me if the practice ended in 1598 when Portugal outlawed slavery, or if it ended in 1633 or so when Japan enacted its “closed” country restrictions on foreign access.
