Rebuilding an air-cooled Porsche 911 engine is not the time to guess.

Reuse, Recondition, or Replace?

For example, Alusil cylinders should not be conventionally honed. Nikasil cylinders require special finishing with diamond stones and an extreme plateau surface. Piston-to-cylinder clearance must also be measured carefully because too little clearance can cause seizure, while too much clearance can cause piston slap and poor ring seal.
The guide also makes an important point about piston rings: ring compatibility depends on cylinder material. Chrome rings should not be used on Nikasil, and surface finish becomes especially important because Nikasil is so hard and does not break in like cast iron.
