The Wind
pairing: loser!megan skiendiel x popular!daniela avanzini
warnings: high school au, tension, angst, no happy ending, drabble
The bass pounded through the speakers in the high school gym. Megan found herself in an emerald green suit—the one Dani picked out—shuffled awkwardly up against the wall near the punch table.
The plastic cup shook lightly in her hand as she watched her classmates gather in the center of the gym, dancing like there was no tomorrow and dead in the middle was the girl of her dreams, Daniela Avanzini, with Jonah David, who you could infamously label as the “bad boy” here.
Megan felt her teeth clenching together watching the way he grabbed her hips, guiding Daniela against his body in a smooth motion as the spiciness of the song kicked off teenage hormones.
She stormed out of the gym, tossing the cup in the trash and aggressively pulling her blazer close to her chest. The cold breeze outside met her face immediately. Megan stopped, took a breath, and collapsed down against the wall.
It’s like Daniela put a spell on her, making her thinking of her all the time. Megan was addicted. She dreamt, one day, the Latina would be hers. All the wishful thinking had her heart dreaming again, fluttering into the sky like there was no place she’d rather be. And there wasn’t, not when she was with Daniela.
Then her heart would crash back into the rough asphalt and shatter into a million pieces each time she remembered—Daniela didn’t want her.
Megan recalled a special night just a week ago, on the soft plush carpet of her bedroom with Taylor Swift’s, You Belong With Me, playing softly from Daniela’s pink speaker.
They had danced around like two kids in love, giggling and whatnot, giving Megan this spark of hope she hadn’t felt since the 8th grade. And then they kissed. The wind from outside, brushing through the open window, swarmed them like it tried to uplift them into the air.
If Megan knew that would be her last moment, she’d try to stay forever.
It must’ve been the wind, that night, when she looked into Daniela’s eyes and saw the word ‘forever’ sprinkled in those bright irises. It felt like there was something there—the way they danced all night without a care, Megan could’ve sworn they were destined, her heart truly believed it.
But how dare it tell lies! The chemistry was there! Or maybe, Megan reminisced, tears shedding down her face, it was all in my mind.
