words: 492 | characters: paper, poppy, metag | relationships: poppy x metag, poppy x paper | warnings: vomit and illness
summary: epilogue to 'lets play the game with baba!', where paper suffers the consequences of page eating grass.
“Oh god… why…” paper muttered in between deep, laboured breaths. His body shook as he crouched down over the toilet, a bit of stomach acid dripping down his chin.
“Shh… you’re okay.” Poppy softly reassured while they rubbed his back with one hand, the other used to hold his hair back.
“No, no I’m-” he was abruptly cut off by his own body forcing more of the foreign substance out of itself. He coughed, and screamed, and sobbed as his body yet again purged itself of what was unwelcome. All the while, Poppy soothed him through both word and touch.
“Fuck…” he huffed, finally feeling a sense of relief was over him. “Oh god, oh thank god, that’s better…”
“Yeah? Got it all out?”
“Yeah…”
Are you good to stand up, or do you need a minute?” Poppy asked, scooting around him to flush the toilet.
“I just wanna lay down in bed…”
“Alright then, up we go.” Poppy nodded, helping paper to his feet, albeit as shaky as you’d expect someone who just spent the last fifteen minutes throwing up grass to be.
They led him out of the bathroom and into their mess of a room, where metag idly sat on the bed twiddling their thumbs. They hadn’t known how to help, and the bathroom was a bit too small to comfortably hold three people, so they elected to stay back and let Poppy help.
“Hey, metag?” their attention shot up towards them. “Can you go grab a bucket to put by the bed? Just in case.” Poppy asked.
Metag saluted, before heading off on their assigned task. “Utility closet… end of the hall.” paper offered, out of it. His head was so fuzzy, he couldn’t tell if he was just unwell or switching under the stress.
“Shh! No more work brain from you! Off to bed!” Poppy ordered, peeling back the covers and tucking both him and themself in once they were both safely snuggled up.
“Ugh… why did she have to eat grass?” paper whined, still feeling the burn in his throat from the flesh being exposed to stomach acid.
“Well, she would have been fine if someone didn’t let her out of his sight.” Poppy grumbled.
“And I’m guessing that guy got the boot at the elimination?” paper asked, too hazy to remember the only other ‘he’ on their team had already been eliminated.
“No actually, we won!” Poppy exclaimed happily.
“Oh, wow, wish I was there to see it.” paper chuckled.
Metag clicked the door open, and carried in a bucket that they placed by the side of the bed closest to paper, receiving much thanks, before climbing in themself and plugging in for the night.
“Wait, so who did you leave page with again?” paper questioned.
“Oh, cabby assigned Jack to babysitting duty.” Poppy explained.
Paper fully sank into the mattress, staring at the dark ceiling. “I’m going to kill Jack with my own hands.”
summary: an inventor goes on a quest through their isolated island home to acquire a part to fix their robot partner. also it's technically unfinished because the assignment was to write a scene and then write the things that happen to get the characters to the next scene.
So, today wasn’t the best in the grand scheme of things. Like, it was really bad. METAL had ended up getting into an altercation with another person, and now their camera was completely smashed. The robot couldn’t see a thing without it, and just barely managed to stumble into Payton’s room and lab.
The moment they did, the inventor lost all focus on the book they were reading, jumping up to inspect the damage. “METAL! What happened?!” they panicked, looking over the damage to their chest.
“Jack punched me.” they signed.
“Hard enough to break your camera?!”
“He goes to court ordered anger management therapy for a reason.”
“Okay, okay, I can fix this! Don’t worry!” They immediately rushed towards their drawers, and pulled open the one labeled ‘METAL spare parts’. They rifled through the organized chaos, picking through everything from bolts to battery replacements, but found nothing close to a new camera.
“I-I can’t find a camera!” they exclaimed to keep their blinded partner in the loop. “I just never thought about it, it’s never broken as long as I’ve known you, so I didn’t think about it!”
METAL thought for a moment, listening to their panicked ramblings, before following their voice and tapping them on the shoulder to snap them out of it.
“What about asking Tessa? She fixed me when I broke before you came here, and she replaced my camera once.” they asked, and Payton perked up.
“That’s perfect! Come on, no time to waste!” they exclaimed, grabbing METAL by the wrist and guiding them out of their room and towards Tessa’s lab.
The lab itself was different from Payton’s. Things were organized meticulously, not a single blueprint or part out of place. Payton wondered how anyone could work in such a plain environment.
“Tessa!” they called, walking through the large room, peeking behind the numerous shelves in search of the scientist.
“Back here!” she called back, and Payton ran to her.
Hey found her focusing over Butterfly’s powered down body, trying to painlessly fix some of the damage to their face now that she finally had the time to focus on her child.
“Oh gosh, are they okay?” Payton asked, honestly incredibly disturbed seeing them without their faceplate.
“Of course! They’re all powered down, no chance to feel pain. They’ll be right as rain as soon as I’m done with this…” she trailed off as she focused on connecting two wires.
“That’s good. Do you have a camera?” they cut straight to the point.
“Shouldn’t you be asking Troy or Colm about that?”
“No, no, not a photography camera, a METAL camera! Jack broke theirs.”
Tessa looked up suddenly, finally taking a look at the state METAL was in. She sighed and massaged her temples. “Of course he did…”
“So, can I have one? You won’t even have to install it, I can handle that!”
“I’m sorry, Payton, but I don’t have one. The closest I’ve got is the camera’s for Butterfly’s eyes, and I don’t think those would fit.”
“But-but didn’t you replace it before?!”
“Yes, but that was salvaged from a broken down METAL unit. I only ever found one in working order. I’m sorry, but I just don’t have the part you need, I really am.”
Payton groaned and slid down the wall until they were seated, pulling their knees to their chest. “It’s… fine.” they huffed. They were quickly met with an attention grabbing tap on their shoulder.
“Are you okay?” METAL signed when they looked over.
“I’ll be fine, I’m just worried about you.” they explained. “I don’t know how I’m supposed to fix this. But if I don’t fix it, you’ll just be blind forever, and I don’t want that for you! I-I want to help, but… I don’t know how. I just don’t know what to do, or how to solve this problem. And-and that’s frustrating, because I care about you!” they slouched further into themself.
The two sat together on the ground, the only sounds being Tessa tinkering with Butterfly’s components. METAL tapped their foot on the ground, thinking hard. Payton was a genius, and they were a supercomputer! They surely would be able to come up with a solution if they put their heads together. They just had to figure out something close enough to METAL’s components…
Suddenly, Payton was being shaken. They looked up to see METAL was behind it, desperately grabbing for their attention. Before they could even ask what was happening, METAL started signing.
“Do you think you could make a camera from scratch?” they frantically signed, and Payton thought for a moment.
“Well, I should have almost everything in my room, but I don’t have a lens.” Payton offered, sighing at the lack of a key component.
“What if we asked someone for one?”
“Okay, METAL, I love you, but where would we find someone other than Tessa that could possibly just have a lens laying around?”
“Could you take apart a camera?”
Payton thought for a moment. “I mean, yeah, it would be easy. But where would we find a spare one?”
“We could ask Colm.”
“Hard no on that one. That guy really freaks me out. They keep trying to exorcize me and calling me Satan. Like, they actually think I’m Satan. It’s bad…”
“How about we ask Troy?” they offered next.
“I don’t think he’d ever let anyone even touch any of his cameras, yet alone actually take one to take it apart. He’d probably kill us if we even asked.”
“So” they paused for a moment, reconsidering their options. “What if we didn’t ask?”
“So… you’re saying we steal it?”
“For the greater good.”
“Well, yeah, but what happens when he realizes it’s gone?”
“He’ll just assume it’s Cherry playing a prank, or Colm sabotaging him. He’ll never suspect us.”
“Yeah… yeah! It’ll be easy! Let’s go get you that part!” Payton jumped up, pulling METAL up with them, and dragging them out of Tessa’s lab. “Let’s go natch one of Troy’s camera’s!”
Tessa watched as they ran out, their voices getting further and further away. “Should I stop them?” she hummed, and thought for a moment. “No, Troy’s an asshole.”
