I mean generally it makes sense to name stories like these after the most significant thing in them, the thing that sets the plot in motion or is supposed to be focused on whatever
like with naruto where the intended focus was never on the titular character’s ninja aspirations or the mechanics of being a ninja it was about naruto as a person and his growth and development (at least it was supposed to be before kishimoto went fuck it
so I think its pretty telling that the title of death note makes no mention of the notebook;s most devastating wielder - its because light is a coincidental protagonist but the death note is what lies at the core of his actions

like to an outsider light gives the illusion of having orchestrated [vague hand gesture] everything. he manipulates some and kills some others and the pieces fall into place, he looks like the final boss
but ultimately the final boss is the death note itself and light wouldn’t be much of anything without it, which for some reason people choose to forget about
i don’t necessarily consider light bpd like there’s too many things that don’t add up there but i do relate a lot to the way his life has to be spurred irreversibly into motion by an external factor - and the way he seemed to have nothing of importance in his life before said factor
like. that sort of hollowness/that way of existing like a powerful vessel for someone/something else. the ensuing relationship of dependence between him and ryuk or him and the death note. that’s the way i feel pretty much all the time and i really like how it’s been portrayed in light’s case
also like... if you make the argument that light was happiest during the yotsuba arc, which he was... happiness was never his goal?? what good is happiness that comes at the cost of agency and your memories of the most significant things you’ve ever done
he didn’t care about being ~happy~ he cared about doing what he believed he had to do and there’s nothing noble about having to wipe your ambitions from your memory to achieve happiness you weren’t aspiring for
