Es war das erste Mal, dass ein Papst die beschwerliche Reise Ć¼ber die Alpen auf sich nahm. Er war nicht mehr der JĆ¼ngste und hƤtte sich die Strapazen gewiss gerne erspart , wƤre er nicht in einer existenzbedrohenden Notlage gewesen.
Die seit einigen Generationen in Italien festsitzenden Langobarden unter Kƶnig Aistulf hatten vor Kurzem Ravenna erobert und bedrohten nun Rom, das Aistulf als sein Eigentum beanspruchte. Da von Seiten der bisherigen Schutzmacht Byzanz keine Hilfe zu erwarten war, wandte sich Papst Stephan in seiner Not an den frƤnkischen Kƶnig.
