she'd brought her cause before the highest levels of the canterlot elite, and campaigned to make her subjects aware of the environmental crisis. for a while ponies were interested in what she had to say, but they were set in their ways, and soon they began to look after themselves and ignore the princess's message. still, luna persevered. again and again she argued with her sister, pleading princess celestia to act in a time of great need. but celestia was stubborn, and though she saw that the younger princess's intentions were good, she refused to cooperate with her wishes. to luna, the future looked bleak.

in a righteous frenzy, close to despair, the young princess sought to take action. seeing no fruit from her efforts and fearing that her authority alone would not be enough to bring change, she began to organize ponies of like mind, and set in motion plans to derail the ones who cared so little about the damage they caused the earth.

her efforts were not in vain, but the other princess denounced luna's attempts, calling her methods disharmonious and shameful. as celestia continued to do nothing, luna's indignation became venemous. if all her power and authority were to be limited to the governance of the night and its darkness, she reasoned, she would use that and that alone to fight for the ears and eyes of her sister's subjects.

in her frustration, she hatched a plan. each night, as she raised the moon, the princess of shadows held it in the sky one minute longer. as the months of her despair wore on, the hours of the night soon outnumbered the hours of the day, and darkness soon reigned over all the earth. celestia feared for her sister, but her desire for harmony among the earth's inhabitants was as zealous as luna's was for its beauty. after one month of the night mare's unbroken darkness, they fought viciously. celestia had the strength of time on her side, but luna struck back mightily, filled with anger. with the last of her strength, celestia imprisoned her headstrong sister in the moon that she had once lifted into the sky.
