i don’t really know what to make of this yet, i’ve only recently started picking up on this trend, but i’m noticing one or two threads worth tugging.

many of these people seem to have very little romantic experience. they’ve dated one or two people, found someone they want to “be with forever,” and stopped seeing anyone else.

some of them have been abused by mentally-ill partners.

many of them seem very insecure in their relationships.

none of them actually seem to be *happy* in their relationships.

the insecurity is fairly typical to monogamists; they’re terrified of their partner finding someone better and maybe secretly afraid they themselves might find someone better if they weren’t restrained from being with anyone else. so our existence is an implicit threat to them.

a line i’ve also heard trotted out several times now is “committed relationships are very serious hard work and love isn’t supposed to be fun.” which suggests to me that these people have never actually been with someone compatible. they’ve tried to build a life with someone who isn’t quite right for them, because they’ve never actually experienced "true love,” to put it crassly. they don’t know what love actually is, and because they’ve cut themselves off from further experience, they probably never will.

let me tell you, i have relationships with people i truly, deeply clicked with, and they don’t take ~hard work~ to make them work. they’re uplifting, a source of hope and inspiration and they give me a reason to get out of bed in the morning. they give me energy; they don’t take it away. if a crazy borderline chick with a string of disastrous relationships behind her can manage that, i feel pretty confident in saying that it’s not unique to me.

that would explain the fixation on monogamy, but what about the actual anger at and hate for poly people as a class? i get the impression that because these people are deeply invested in the relationships they’ve struggled to build with incompatible partners, our existence is a reminder that they might have wasted their time or could have been happier if they had let themselves have more diverse experiences. it’s easier to try to make us stop existing than face that possibility.
