It was an ancient city that became famous for its brown wool and pottery.⁣ ⁣ Today it is home to the University of Gastronomic Sciences, which offers degrees in food tourism. ⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 35mm | 1/200s | ISO 200⁣ Taken on 30/05/2020.⁣ ⁣ What is now known as the Pollenzo district stands on the remains of the Roman Pollentia and late-ancient settlement dating back to the 5th–6th century AD.⁣ ⁣ The Roman, with its propitious Latin name meaning 'power', was probably founded towards the end of the 2nd century BC in the lands of the Ligures Bagienni, a Celtic–Ligurian people.⁣ ⁣ The Romans chose a flat area near the left bank of the River Tanaro, which had been navigable since pre-historic times and was a main route for river-borne traffic and a link with the Po Valley.⁣ ⁣ Pollentia was laid out in the usual way with a northeast–southwest orientation. Instead of a true ring of outer walls, it was girt with a vallum (or stockade) composed of wooden piles with stonework gates and towers. The public buildings, that is to say the amphitheatre, theatre and forum, were first discovered at the end of the 18th century by Count Franchi di Pont and an architect called Randoni.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ To get to Pollenzo, take a train from Turin to Bra on the Torino Porta Susa–Alba line and then catch the bus (line 2) to Pollenzo.
