A propos Profiling
Former "SNL" cast member Jay Pharoah was jogging down a San Fernando Valley street, when multiple LAPD cops pulled their guns on him, ordere
Jay posted the video Friday night and said the incident went down approximately one week before Ahmaud Arbery's murder. He says he was getting exercise, wearing noise-canceling headphones, when he saw the cops approach. He thought whoever they were after was in big trouble ... and then it dawned on him -- they were after him.
The cops told Jay he fit the description of a suspect -- black male wearing gray sweatpants and a gray shirt.
You see the security footage in Jay's video, and it matches his narration. You see a cop approach Jay from behind, with gun pointed. Another officer arrives with his gun in the air, and a patrol car rolls up and one of the 2 cops exits with his gun drawn.
Jay was cuffed, and with a knee to the neck, he urgently tried explaining he was not the guy they were looking for. He told the cops to look him up on Google, adding, "You will see that you made a big mistake." He says the cops released him "a minute later."
US Police Harass and Arrest black Sudanese Man to Find He Is FBI Agent
FACTS
1. I am a white woman
2. As a teenager, I shoplifted too many times to count
3. As a teenager, I smoked weed too many times to count
4. As a teenager, over half of the time I was in a vehicle, weed was present
5. The high school that I went to was 95% white and only one family in attendance was African American
*Those are true facts about my life, but here are some more...*
1. I’ve been pulled over for speeding about 5 times since I was 18 and I’ve never gotten a ticket
2. I have never been, and my car has never been, searched by the police
3. In high school, none of my friends were ever searched by the police
4. When I was shoplifting from stores as a teenager, I never once felt like I would be caught, no one even noticed me
5. When I was a senior in high school, I was in the backseat of a car full of other teenagers on my way to a party at around 11 p.m. (Passed curfew for several kids in the car). A cop pulled up behind us and ended up pulling us over because the driver panicked and basically drove in a circle. When the cop got to the window, he asked for everyone’s ID. We handed them over and told him we were on our way to a friend’s house for the night. We had bottles of alcohol in bags on the floor but he never noticed. The driver said he had a hunting rifle in the trunk for hunting season with his dad, and again, that statement was ignored. I had already turned 18 and the cop told me that I could be charged with the delinquency of a minor for being present with the other kids and I got an attitude with him and basically said “Not likely” and gave him a teenage eye roll. The cop gave us our IDs back and told us to get where we were going safely. That was that. Five, white, teenagers were stopped after curfew, on the way to a party. Bottles of alcohol were in the car, a gun was in the car, and I can guarantee you that one or more had drugs on them. We weren’t searched, we weren’t hauled into the police station, our parents weren’t even called.Â
Before I became an adult, I never wondered about how I got out of so many things or why I didn’t have a criminal record for all of the dumb stuff that I did. Now, I don’t have to wonder. I don’t because I am white and I lived in suburbia. In my last year of grad school, I taught American Literature at a high school that was 90% African American. For the others, I had a handful of Hispanic and Asian students and two white students (but only in homeroom). One day, I asked my kids how many of them had been searched by the police, been arrested, been in the car with someone when they or their vehicle was searched by the police, or had been stopped by the police when they were doing nothing wrong. Every single African American student and most of the Hispanic students raised their hands. Every. Single. One.Â
