Derek: Kate's back.

Gerard: Scott isn't going to leave any of his pack members behind. Heāll try to save them all. His pack is strong, but separate them and it leaves them all vulnerable.
Scott: Everyone know their assignments? We are going to win this. Showtime!

6. Hugging headcanon
The rookie pilot sits alone in the darkened mess. Her fingers shake ever so slightly against the cool steel table, and her tea is steadily growing cold next to her. You have to eat something, rookie, her stern squad leader had told her. Youāve just been through hell.
Yeah, she agrees. But she still canāt make her hands move towards the mug. She aches all over, and every time she closes her eyes all she can see are the steady, silent, bright pops of light against the blackness of space that meant another pilot gone, another friend lost. She thinks it might have been okay, had it not been for the comms ringing in her helmet.
āHey,ā comes a gentle voice from the opposite end of the mess, and the rookie picks up her head. Normally, just seeing TheĀ Poe Dameron, ace pilot and Black Squadron leader, poster boy of the Resistance - and maybe, admittedly, one of the reasons she joined in the first place - would have been enough to make her stomach flip with excited nerves. Now, though, she just stares dully across the room at him as he picks his way over to her. It strikes her as odd. He should be out celebrating the victory. Not here.
āHey,ā he says again, and his voice is low, his eyes sad.Ā āCan I sit with you?ā
She blinks and nods, and to her dull surprise, he sits next to her. He still smells like a cramped cockpit, like her - stale, recycled air, heat from the guns, sweat and nerves.Ā
Heās silent for a moment, and then he speaks.Ā āIām so sorry.ā
The rookie doesnāt move. She just closes her eyes, folds her hands in her lap.
āItās brutal. It always is. Dogfights are justā¦ā he sighs.Ā āThereās a freedom that comes with flying a bird, but sometimesā¦ sometimes, it comes with a price. And itās one thing to say that, but the first time you get up there, first time you experienceĀ that priceā¦ Itās never easy. Iām so sorry, kid.āĀ
His voice is low, and soft, and so kind, and without even realizing it, the rookie starts to cry. The tears drip off of her nose and land with a quiet splatĀ in the thick fabric of her orange flightsuit and she shudders as she breathes out,Ā āTheyāre all gone.ā
Poe makes a sympathetic noise in the back of his throat, and when she looks up at him, a blurry mass of orange through the thick tears in her eyes, he looks like he might cry, too. He rubs her shoulder, the pressure comforting and soothing as he reminds her, āYeah. But.Ā Youāre still here.ā
She canāt help it - she buries her face in her hands and starts to sob, and next thing she knows, The Poe Dameron has pulled her into a tight hug, letting her head rest on his shoulder as he rubs her back, as he keeps murmuring in that soft, kind, gentle voice, and sheās reminded of her older brother. Poe lets her cry her heart out onto his shoulder, his grip never loosening. He keeps comforting her, keeps reminding her of her strength, that she survived, that she shouldnāt blame herself. For the first time since she touched down, she feelsā¦ safe.Ā
She feels like she can make it through this.
When she finally moves away, still sniffling, Poe nods and flashes her a ghost of that famous smile. And now sheās remembering that Poe is almost always late to victory celebrations, and he always hovers near a rookie pilot with swollen eyes or shaking fingers. He always goes to the medbay after a fight. And once more sheās reminded of the brother that the First Order stole from her.Ā
āAh, no, your tea is cold,ā he says, making a face at the mug. She laughs a little and wipes her eyes and nose on her flightsuit, and Poe smiles as if heās relieved to hear the sound of her laugh. āWait here. Iāll make another pot. And Iām making the goodĀ stuff this time.ā
She nods, and a weight starts to dissolve from her shoulders, and she thinks that maybe, just maybe, everything will be okay.
