So glad you’re interested! iPhone voice memo recording works perfectly - in some cases it even works better than my professional mic! As long as you edit the sound so it comes out clearer using Garageband, Audacity, or any voice editing program, then you’re good to go :)

RUTH'S PODFIC TIPS (10/?) - WHEN PODFICCER/BETA COLLIDE
The thing about reading stuff out loud is that you notice every single word, and to a larger extent how a word or phrase would fit in a sentence.
If you spot errors in the story, like a tense change, or a misspelt word, don’t just read them as they are, because then it won’t make sense to your listeners! Correct it in your podfic, and tell the author so they can edit the error out if they wish.
In a way, a podficcer can also double-act as a beta :)
RUTH'S PODFIC TIPS (9/?) - PODFIC GENRES
I’ve already made a post on how to read smut, but other genres have their own style when read out loud.
Crack – be lively! Read with lots of gusto and emotion, and it doesn’t matter if you overdo it, because it’ll just add to the hilarity. This podfic by read by lunchee is the crackiest podfic I’ve ever heard and had me in fits. My podfic of ingberry's "Dickmagician" is also cracky.
Introspective, poetic prose – some authors write really, really long paragraphs with no dialogue but lots of poetry-like language. I call it “prosetry”. This podfic I did has an awful lot of that for your reference.
Internet – some stories have characters texting each other, emailing each other, and even things like posts on Twitter, Facebook and other social media. Adding voice effects helps a lot when reading them out loud, but you could also try saying things like, “email from: [email protected] to [email protected]” in a distant, disembodied voice. To get an idea of what I’m talking about, this podfic by read by lunchee is a perfect example.

RUTH'S PODFIC TIPS (8/?) - FORMATS, PHRASES AND FREETALK
Most podficcers begin their podfic with [title], [author], [podficcer], [summary] and then jump straight into the story. My podfics always include the rating, fandom, pairings and tags, but that’s just something I like to do, because then people would be properly informed on whether the podfic contains their kinks/squicks and not be traumatised (unless they’ve read the story already).
Some podficcers also do freetalk, which is basically them talking about why they chose this story to podfic and other random stuff, which is very amusing to listen to a lot of the time. Here you can find some freetalk I did for my latest podfic. I’ve also seen people upload outtakes or their podfics, which are basically audio bloopers that can be HILARIOUS.
Here are a couple of (hopefully) useful phrases you can include in your podfic.
“Note from [your username]: the line breaks in this podfic are taken from a song called [the song] by [the artist]. [optional: The full song will be played at the very end of this recording.]”
“Dear readers, please note that this story contains [warnings e.g. graphic depictions of violence and swearing.]”
“This story was written for [insert fest name or name of author].”
“And now for some freetalk from the podficcer, [your username]!”
“The end. Thanks for listening!”
“This was [title of story] written by [author] and read by [podficcer]. If you enjoyed this podfic and/or the story, please leave a comment on the site you downloaded it from!”
RUTH'S PODFIC TIPS (7/?) - PODFIC LIFESAVER
Now that the consent date is over, you can start recording your podfic! But before you begin, here's a tip that will save you hours and hours of editing time. Listen to the audio file to find out what it is!
RUTH’S PODFIC TIPS (6/?) - PEOPLE OF THE WORLD
This podfic guide is all about accents.
1. Be comfortable with your accent! To quote a line from the musical Once, "Ve are people of the vorld."
2. Me attempting a Czech accent, an Irish accent, an American accent and a British accent. Please take this with a pinch of salt.
3. How not to be offensive when trying out accents in podfic.
For your reference, this podfic is the whole reason why I think foreign accents are sexy.
My latest podfic, All But Memories (Merlin/Suits crossover), is set in both the US and the UK, so you can hear me talk in American and British accents. I also attempt an Irish accent (very briefly) in this podfic.
