This post will discuss what Pocketnet is, why it was created, how it works, and some similarities it shares with Bitcoin.
Pocketnet is the brainchild of Daniel Satchkov a mathematician and risk manager. By his own admission, most of his career was spent in finance where he worked in software risk management and because of his calculating mindset he was able to foresee how dictatorial social media would eventually become towards the end of 2018. Because he was fearful of how platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter would eventually have a zero tolerance policy for what they consider “hate speech” and consequently block content to existing subscribers Daniel decided to take it upon himself to develop Pocketnet, an online social media platform with no central authority, which instead runs on selective computers around the world, meaning users would always be able to see the content, as long as they are subscribed to a channel or group on Pocketnet.
How does Pocketnet work?
Pocketnet is modelled on the style of cryptocurrency e.g. Bitcoin and Ethereum, because it has no central authority and uses the blockchain to make transactions and ensure security. The signup process is as follows:
Access https://pocketnet.app/video
Click button to generate a private login key e.g. QR code. (This key can be used to login on any device e.g. smartphone, tablet, or desktop)
The user is now a part of Pocketnet and can post without the threat of censorship. Much like Facebook, the user can share links to articles, videos, photos, or just blog directly to their list.
Is Pocketnet really safer?
Unlike the majority of other platforms Pocketnet does not record the user’s keystrokes, viewing habits, or searches; rendering popup ads, suggestive posts or invites based on viewing information obsolete, because Pocketnet will not track the user, which will be a huge relief for those who dislike being targeted with unnecessary ads. Furthermore, because no central authority exists no one will remove posts that others may disagree with on a political or personal level. There is of course a downside to this, being that because no central authority exists threatening posts or indecent imagery may not be tracked or reported as much. No doubt Daniel will have taken precautions to ensure no pornographic imagery or visceral content can be uploaded and if it is then the user’s account will most likely be suspended, nonetheless this is always a risk when running a platform without a central authority at the helm.
Why signing up now is akin to investing in Bitcoin in 2009
In 2009 no one would have predicted how high Bitcoin’s stock would rise in the coming years. The reason for which is because back then cryptocurrency was practically unheard of, but the fact remains digital currency is safer on the blockchain than it would be with a central authority e.g. a registered bank, because no one can access your account without a private key e.g. QR code, whereas a bank can easily crash if the database goes down, the money is embezzled, or the bank is liquidated, but the blockchain (otherwise known as the ledger) is public and will always exist online, meaning everyone can see it, but no one can access a unique account, not even their own one unless they have the correct private key. Even then, it must be approved by the blockchain and it’s minors beforehand. The one drawback of this level of security is that if the user loses their private key there is no way to access it again, because unlike a bank the user won’t be issued a new one. This has lead to many infamous stories of people losing thousands just because they lost the key.
The same logic applies to Pocketnet, because it too operates on the blockchain, has no central authority, and also has its own form of cryptocurrency called Pocketcoin. Pocketcoin is automatically given when the user receives a positive rating on a post. Pocketcoin is then directly deposited into the user’s personal Pocketcoin wallet. The native currency can then be spent on advertising on the platform, so the user can generate further exposure for their business and build their list of subscribers.
Pocketnet also allows the user to provide donation addresses in the form of Bitcoin and Ethereum, so there has never been a better time to get involved and become one of the pioneers of the platform before it takes off commercially and it will.
