Dunno how much I'll actually manage to draw for it on the actual week. but the @heropartnerweek prompt for 'scars' did give me some goodxwriting motivation, so! ...As it turns out you actually get an ao3 link. Because I've tried to post it just On Tumblr like 4 times and it haaaaaaaaaaaaaaates it. So much Sososo much.

Okay time to show y'all the first part of what I've been ill over the past 2 weeks. (and 13 years)
Team Snowstorm everybody!!!!!
Lore and transparene versions below,,,
So! these two are my pmd:explorers team (my first team from my first pmd game i have SUCH a soft spot for these two,,, they are tge sole reason eevee and shinx are my favorite. My pokesona as a kid was 'every eeveelution at the same time but shiny and can summon elemental wings.) (also i had to change the eevee's name bc i stole her original name for my user)(and yet only within the past month have i actually deeply elaborated on her and startail's lore... somehow...)
...Anyways. Personal lore aside, we got;
Winterfoot (eevee, she/her)
Our resident from-the-dark-future human-turned-pokemon. She really is initially just going along with things until she figures stuff out, but... she likes it here, likes helping pokemon, enjoys having the ability and opportunity to see a pokemon who needs help and just. Help them, no questions, minimal preperation. Figuring out who she used to be kinda starts to feel... less important, over time, when who she is and what she can do here are so much more immediate, and feel like they matter so much more.
(She might also be a bit of an adrenaline junkie, but hasn't really figured that part out.)
She doesn't really see herself as good at reading people; it's not that she occasionally doesn't get Bad Vibes from people, more that she's instintively over-paranoid and gets false positives so often that she just ignores all of them until proven right. (I mean, she absolutely didn't trust this random Shinx when she get here, but. Yeah, sure, what did she have to lose? What are they going to do, beat her up and steal the pocket money she doesn't have?) She doesn't want to risk not helping someone when she could be saving them a lot of grief, even if it might be a scam.
As mostly a consequence of this, the one thing that drives her up a wall in an instant is liars. Manipulators, especially, and past that even more so when someone else got hurt because of their lies that shouldn't have. If she gets hurt, fine, whatever, her fault for falling for it. But anyone else??? Nah. Nah, you're gonna catch these hands. Paws. Whatever.
(Really, she doesn't do well alone in general. The anxieties spiral, she gets locked into indecision, everything becomes overwhelming far too fast. But with a partner? Sudeenly everything has direction. Doing things for them is easy motivation. They need their relic fragment? Done. They want to form a team? Done. They want her to start actually taking care of herself? ...Well, sure, while they're around she guesses she has to start doing that now, too.)
(...She's semi-aware that this probably makes her easy to manipulate, but that goes in the Self Sustaining Anxiety Tornado with everything else. Until it gets flung back at her like a high-speed gravelrock.)
(Speaking of which she always keeps a good stack of Gravelrocks on her. Nothin' like knocking out a fleeing criminal from a room and a half away.)
Most of her story is pretty stock for pmd2- but of note is that, pre-being-eebied-to-the-dark-future, she's unovan- lived in Icirrus city, was briefly convinced to join team plasma (she THOUGHT they were 'liberating pokemon' from abusive trainers. Being a random grunt and not N, she got the full experience of 'hey a lot of these pokemon Do Not Want To Go Actually' and was Immediately Very Upset About It), afterwards decided to move to nimbasa- started working at that bw2 era pokemon shelter. Obtained a following of like 6 purrloin. She jokes they're her pokemon team. (This may or may not be a reference to my all-liepard (and a carracosta) run of pokemon black.)
Never got her drivers license. Hates cars and driving too much, causes way too much anxiety. Thinks trains are cool. Loves her job, never really think she'll do anything too dramatically heroic; she's not a good enough trainer for that sort of thing.
(Proceeds to get eebied Four Times and fights pokemon gods Two Of Those Times)
...I have more to talk about w/ her but this post is already long so SECOND we have (my bestest boy. my son. bravest bestest son boy);
Startail (shinx, he/him)
Startail, by the time he found Winter, was... honestly really used to asking for help and getting weird, 'who even is this kid?' looks and a 'no', so having this pokemon who had just? Been passed out on the beach? Not only agree to help, but agree to an exploration team? ...Honestly he's just surprised he got this far. And darnit if he's not going to do everything he can to keep the ball rolling; exploration is his dream, he loves new places and things and discoveries. Helping other pokemon is... cool too, he guesses? It's not like he doesn't want to help pokemon, or wants them hurt or anything, he's just not overly attached to pokemon he doesn't know very well is all. He does very much care about the world itself, though, and finds himself caring a lot about the pokemon he's getting close to; Winter most of all, who is... concerningly inattentive to her own well-being most of the time?
He starts to find that sticking to Winter's side, doing everything with her... isn't as bad as he'd feared it might be- when it's someone who seems like they actually enjoy spending time with you, it's actually pretty fun! He wants to explore with her, help her with things, he's concerned when she takes hits she's not supposed to, when she completely neglects her hunger because "I haven't fainted yet, I'm fine. We need to conserve apples." (they brought three and have picked up five more since. They are literally in Apple Woods, Winter.)
But- yeah hanging out with people who just like him isn't draining, it turns out, and he gets pretty stuck to her side as a result- though he eventually starts getting close enough to the other guild members (Bidoof first, then... slowly, the rest of them, too) to like hanging around them too- but Winter is his first friend, his best friend, the one who taught him he could have one of those, have any of this- so obviously she still gets first priority...
Eventually, after... everything (standard game, postgame), Startail figures out (by experimentation) that they're finally able to evolve- but before he evolves fully, decides he wants to wait until Winter can evolve. (Which requires her, of all pokemon, to decide. It's the first time she's hated being an eevee. She's the only kind of pokemon that has this many choices for an evolution- and not only that but she's making Startail wait! (She's not, he obviously decided to do this himself.)
Eventually, they manage to get their paws on a Water Stone, and- with the prospect of finally having a water type on the team, plus all the long-range moves she knows water types get? All of a sudden that's a simple chioce. (Finally... Okay yeah she still has some doubts but she's waited long enough. Fish Time. She likes water plenty anyways, it feels suitably thematic.) (also despite the internet's Allegations this vaporeon is very aroace btw)
(...and, a few months later, (the subject of a current fic i'm writing), Startail wakes up in their new base. Alone. No sign of her leaving, no disturbance. Like she was there and then wasn't. The scent of mint and ozone, just above the smell of the ocean. What she always smelled like, maybe a little stronger now, for whatever reason. But otherwise, there's no trace of her. And as much of him wants to panic, wants to look for her... here, just waking up, a part of him feels like it always knew, since he found her for the second time on that beach, that it would never last forever. That she was bound to leave. He just... he just had to be grateful for the time he did get, now...)
Have some post-Reunion 2 lore that came to me in a vision yesterday morning
(Winterfoot is very solidly aro-ace. Startail I'm thinking is somewhere around bi-ace? He'd honestly really like trying to be a dad again after Manaphy. But like. With someone they can reasonably care for. Winterfoot was an anxious mess that entire time and would much rather be the cool aunt or something)

It's been years, now, since Ingo disappeared. Emmet knows what happened to him, but not where he went, and has no idea how to get there.
This was supposed to be a vacation.
But it's becoming clearer and clearer that here, finally, in some random school in the middle of the ocean, he can find answers.
(Really, at this point, the opportunity might be the only thing stopping him from going to Areceus and its trio themselves.)
I think a lot of the fun I come from this funky lil au I'm writing, worldbuilding wise, is just like. Considering the effect of taking a PMD2 protagonist and putting them /back/ in the human world... like,
-Got /really good/ at throwing Gravelrocks and can now throw anything gravelrock shaped with a deadly accuracy. Mostly uses this to catch pokemon but Will use it as a threat if prompted
-Keeps forgetting she doesn't have inventory limits and will just drop stuff she doesn't need. Or eat it. (Misses dungeon apples. And gummis. And gummi shakes.....)
-Makes pokemon noises. Just kinda all the time under her breath
-Knows Where The Stairs Are. Becomes mildly offended if you imply she does not know where the stairs are. Her Job is knowing where the stairs are
-Hates crowds now. Not because of social anxiety, just because being in a room surrounded by people she doesn't know activates Monster House OST and oh no she needs to get to the hallway NOW she doesn't have any room-wide AOE moves she NEEDS a bottleneck-

At long last, through headache and eepy, I present- Team Firespark (Shadowfire and Thunderfur) Lore
I have so many thoughts about these two,,,, (lore and individual refs under cut again)
So, first;
Thunderfur
Honestly my main inspiration here was that theory of Darkrai, from the end of Eos, becoming the human that later becomes the protag, but because I already had different plans for Winterfoot, going "Okay... but what if I had them be a different protag...' so.
Thunderfur starts out with incredibly patchy memories of their last life, meets Shadowfire at the start of the game- and upon realizing that they seem to be here to help people, they obviously must be the hero from their memories- the one that used to be human, who went through all that for their partner and to save the world. Because, well, here they are, clearly meant to save the world again- what kind of fool would send the enemy to help?
The accusation that they're the human that did those horrible things to a partner pokemon... doesn't line up with any of their fragmented memories, so they're pretty sure they're not true, but the accusation that they might've been a terrible person pre-memory-wipe... rattles them, considerably. (Because what if they weren't the hero? What if...) But their partner needs them, came along with them in their banishment despite everything, so they have to ignore it.
Ninetales reassuring them that they aren't the human from the legend... almost helps, if it wasn't worded so specifically. They already somewhat knew that- but the only question is, who were they? Gardevoir doesn't quite seem to know either, just that they were a soul, lost, pulled to this world to do good. And that... honestly, that helps more than anything. That regardless of who they were, their soul wanted to do good. To help. Maybe it doesn't matter who they used to be.
By now, they're very, very attached to Shadowfire. That's the only 'mon that stayed with them, even when everyone else- themself somewhat included- thought they were a terrible person. They want, desperately, to find a moonstone and evolve, they want to be strong enough to protect Shadowfire from everything, so nothing can hurt either of them like that again. (They're still... somewhat hesitant to sleep in the house they built, now. The town apologized, sure, said they 'believed them the whole time', but when they turned on them so fast... it's hard to feel safe.)
...But when they actually evolve. When they see their own reflection in the pond's water, see icy blue eyes instead of a cool, saltwater blue... they were going to do this as a surprise, wake up Shadowfire in the morning to show off, but now? Now that they know exactly which pokemon they are in their memories? They can't keep their partner safe. Not with who they were. Who they are. The pokemon who aimed to drive a god mad and plunge the world into darkness can't protect anyone.
So they leave. Leave their gear behind, vanish into the wilderness, not leaving so much as a note behind. It's cruel, they know it is, but they suppose that's who they are.
Next,
Shadowfire
Before Thunderfur ever fell on their doorstep, long before, Shadowfire wanted to be a rescuer. They wanted to explore, find new places, help as many other pokemon as they could along the way. They even found a team partner- and they got along great, built an entire team base, and it was home.
But when the natural disasters started, Shadowfire's partner was scared. They signed up for mystery dungeons, sure, but not ravines, not the ground shaking under their feet- not natural disasters like this. They wanted to leave the continent entirely, find a place to live that wasn't falling apart. Shadowfire refused, knowing there were more pokemon that needed help now than ever, this was exactly what they signed up for...
They couldn't come to terms about it, and Shadowfire's partner left. They... couldn't really stay at their old base, after that. Had too many memories.
When this strange new pokemon landed at their feet, though, willing and even excited to jump into a ravine mystery dungeon, with basically no reservations? Of course they were ecstatic about it. Somewhat nervous, sure, they wanted to do this right, and it has... been a while since they've been part of a proper team... Arceus above, they're just scared of losing this so easily again.
But as their journey continues, Shadowfire starts to once again trust their partner, trust Thunderfur, completely.
And, as a result, their Dimensional Scream ability starts to work again.
The visions help a few times- help them avoid pursuing teams (...almost entirely...) in their escape, help them know where to go to find Ninetales- not that Shadowfire outright tells Thunderfur about them, since they seem a bit touchy on their past..
...Shadowfire, on complete accident, gets glimpses. They get flashes of a dark, desolate future, maniacal laughter, madness.
They also get flashes of a soul-crushing loneliness and grief.
They... understand why Thunderfur might not want to talk about any of that, so they just... never bring it up, really.
The vision that scares them, though, is one they get just a single day before they discover the evolution spring is open; one of themself, fully evolved, purple flames abound- and Thunderfur, in front of them. Their form is different, they've evolved, and they look too much like who both Shadowfire and Thunderfur feared they once were, but Shadowfire is much more concerned about the fact that their partner looks terrified. Not even of anything they might be facing- Thunderfur looks terrified of Shadowfire, in that vision.
So Shadowfire evolves, once- makes the excuse that they just want to wait for their final evolution until Thunderfur can evolve,too, just to try and delay that terrible vision for as long as they can.
.....And then, one morning, when they wake up, Thunderfur is just... gone.
Shadowfire looks for them, of course they do, but despite their best efforts, their partner is once again nowhere to be found.
...And it feels... terrible. To be abandoned again.
But at least they have an idea of why. And, quite frankly, if they're right? They think Thunderfur's reason for leaving is complete and utter nonsense. So what if they used to suck? They're Shadowfire's rescue team partner now. And you know what? Maybe they're overselling it! Maybe they weren't actually that bad to begin with!
So Shadowfire, determined, finally decides then and there to evolve. Because even if they have to meet Thunderfur scared, at least they'll meet at all,
And then?
Then Shadowfire goes digging for answers. They need to know who Darkrai was. Why they were like that. How they became who they are.
Because, at the end of the day, no matter who they used to be?
Not done with their ref since I need to get their evolved forms down (and also. the third team member) but I'm impatient so! have a preview of team Firespark!
hm. head hurt too much for drawing. Going to post world lore instead
So im gonna call the whole. au. thing. the "To The Left" au. because reasons
That established- I got some lore about the world, and how extra markings work!!
So there are subtle variations in patterns and body hape for every pokemon regardless, just as a sort of natural thing; they can be different sizes, different weights, fluffier, shorter-furred, all that. But distinct, bold markings atypical of a species can come from a few places;
a) A parent pokemon of a different species can pass on some markings to their child- these markings will 'evolve' as their child does; so, a first evolution child may have markings similar to their parent's first evolution- and when they evolve, those markings will instead resemble that of a parent's later evolution. If a parent only has two stages and the child 3, the child's middle evolution may have a mix of both markings, or tend towards one stage
(Startail's eye color, forehead spots and, later, sick eyeliner, are from his mother! His ear shape as a Luxray was also influenced in this way)
a1) A pokemon using Transform may also retain markings from their previous form in a similar manner. This can go both ways; a pokemon transforming into a spinda, then back to their original form, may retain spinda spots- and if they then transform into an ursaring, that ursaring can /also/ have spinda spots. It can get rather messy, though newer markings (or markings that pokemon likes more) are prioritized
b) Some special abilities and magical influences can also cause markings to appear, such as the Dimensional Scream ability;
What ability or influence causes which marking are consistent in shape, but can vary per pokemon in size and color, and (though much less often) placement. Occasionally, a legend or other significantly powerful pokemon can choose to sort of sponsor a certain pokemon, or they can be altered by a significantly magical environment, which will leave distinct marks. (Altering eye color is very common in these situations.) These sorts of influences can also determine which form a pokemon evolves to, if there are variant evolutions possible (ie regional variants). However, specific stones, stats, ect. necessary for any particular evolution still apply with much higher priority. (A specific influence may nudge an eevee towards evolving into, say, a glaceon, but if she uses a water stone, she'll still evolve into a vaporeon.)
c) The third, most dramatic method, is scars. When a pokemon's form is changed significantly- mainly through evolving, but any significant physical change will do (deerlings changing form would not count, but a castform changing form would... though tbf that is. a cloud. I dunno if castform can scar in the first place)- any clear, visible scarring will be represented in a dramatic pattern on the new form's scales/fur/skin/ect, in a kind of kintsugi sort of way.
Further dramatic form changes will further stylize upon the initial marking, occasionally resulting in the marking duplicating on the other side for symmetry purposes
Granted, this process only occurs when evolution/form change is achieved in a stable, and/or magic-rich environment, such as luminous spring. It's also more likely to occur the more dramatic the change in form is, and is also more likely the smaller/shallower the scar is. (Doing something like regrowing a whole limb is technically possible, but it'll have to be in the chillest environment possible, with Xerneas himself actively blessing the evolution, in the biggest gathering of magic in the pokemon world. Just Luminous Spring wouldn't cut it.)
It's also unlikely for the process to alter birth defects, though if a defect (or anything else) had been surgically corrected, the correction would stay, and those scars would stylize. (How a pokemon sees the scar or alteration does have a significant effect on how it's altered by the form change. If a pokemon's appearance was altered against their will, those changes would disappear and stylize like scars. If they changed their appearance on purpose, or grew attached to the change, it would stay, possibly altering to appear more natural.)
Evolution can be achieved in stressful conditions, especially in mystery dungeons, but the less magic saturation there is, and the more stressful the situation, the less stylized the marking will be, and the more likely the scarring will just transfer directly. Pokemon who desperately want to evolve and don't have access to a place like luminous spring may venture into mystery dungeons for this express purpose, as a last resort. (Or if they don't know any better yet. Rescue teams see... a lot of this.)
Of note here is that standard pokemon battles don't leave scars; there has to be intent to hurt or kill for a pokemon to do such a thing to another. Most scars on the average pokemon are from environmental threats, like cave-ins, non-pokemon-fire burns, or frostbite
(I imagine a 'future of darkness' would get... rather cold)
That all, of course, makes evolution a much bigger decision for a pokemon. If they evolve and then obtain a significant, appearance-altering scar, that's just there forever now.
The average pokemon, who doesn't expect to see the sort of combat that leaves scars, may want to delay evolution, just in case they get a scar in an accident and don't want to keep it.
For explorers and rescue teams, it's balancing the possibility of obtaining permanent, painful, stiff scars, versus the power boost evolution naturally gives.
For both, though, evolution is still seen as a sort of natural progression as a pokemon gets older, so most (though not all! Some pokemon are perfectly content to never evolve) do want to evolve eventually. It's just quite a big decision of when.
(It is incredibly difficult, though not impossible, to force a pokemon to evolve if they truly do not want to. It's seen as an absolutely horrible thing to do, much worse than just scarring them- almost comparible in horridness to actual murder. Some pokemon claim it's worse than murder. Pokemon forced to evolve will very often retain clear, messy markings of their previous evolution.)
This all, of course has other societal impacts- pokemon trying to figure out where others' markings come from, if they're genetics or scarring, though it being a mildly taboo thing to directly ask, records dedicated to markings obtained from legendary influences, non-evolving pokemon often being seen as more delicate due to their inability to evolve (and very often resenting it and becoming revered, or feared, explorers), pokemon who can consistently, dramatically form change being seen as sort of psudo-legendaries (mega evolution is difficult to achieve this with, as it's staggaringly difficult to mega-evolve in a calm environment, so this is more common for pokemon like Hoopa and Meloetta)... and other things I'll probably think of later
