𝗔𝗦 𝗔 𝗞𝗜𝗗,      he struggled with sociability,       anxiety       &         expressing emotions.        something that would only get worse         &         carry over into his adult life.         to cope with frightening         &         overwhelming situations          &          a lack of friends,       he manifested an ‘ imaginary friend ’         or DOUBLE.       a personality who could be emotional,         give him advice,        be sociable         &          most of all supportive.       𝐇𝐄  𝐇𝐀𝐒  𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑  𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐍 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐎𝐅  𝐇𝐈𝐒  𝐃𝐎𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐄.         &         𝗛𝗔𝗦 𝗡𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥  𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗗  𝗜𝗡  𝗔𝗡𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗘  𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧  𝗜𝗧.         sam is often vacant         &         lives the majority of the time inside his own head,         a place he calls   ‘  the mind palace  ’         he sees the world as dark           &         his head,        peaceful.        he also always showed signs of   DEPRESSION    but this escalated once he left basswood.       𝐀  𝐁𝐈𝐆  𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘  𝐈𝐍  𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐖𝐎𝐎𝐃.         when his girlfriend’s      father,     a miner,        was injured     &     left permanently disabled,     sam began questioning the safety of the town’s mine     &     if regulations were being followed.     the mine was one of the main source of the town’s employment and income.   when he realized that they were not following regulations,   he wrote an article on it.     the mine was closed as a result     &     many residents of the town lost their jobs.        after the intense animosity toward him from everyone in town       &     a failed proposal to his girlfriend,       anna,      he left town.     (   leaving behind his best friend     nick,     his goddaughter     joan      &     anna.  ) 𝐓𝐖𝐎 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐒 𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑;    he is told that his best friend nick has been killed in a car accident.    he returns to basswood for the funeral,       but misses it       &       only attends the wake.       he is approached by his god - daughter,       joan,       who asks him to investigate her father’s death because of its suspicious nature.       sam reluctantly agrees.     he finds out more than he intends to.
