Hello friend!

okay okay.

so we all know the whole like “opposites attract” and whatever. so i present to you; sodapop and steve. decently opposite (at least in my mind.) and i can get into their whole dynamic and stuff later but for right now here’s my thought. i see a lot of people who are drawn to certain kinds of people, so a lot of their closest friends are very similar to each other. and we see that with steve and pony. for them it’s less of a whole circumstance and situation, but more of whatever the opposite of opposites attract is. they are so so similar that i think they sort of subconsciously push back at each other.

when some things are too similar they don’t blend as well, so because pony and steve are so similar in personality, they butt heads. as we know, ponyboy is a sassy queen and honestly, steve is too (you can’t convince me otherwise) and mind you, steve sort of started to grow out of it, but ponyboy is only fourteen and he still has a long way to go in that department. honestly i think pony just reminds steve of a younger him, which -if you’ve ever experienced that type of relationship- is an interesting experience, especially because steve doesn’t want pony to end up exactly like him. pony was provided opportunities for a future, and he can’t waste that.

and steve is a little rougher with pony because he cares. he sees everything he could’ve been in pony. he sees the result of pony’s loving, caring family and mostly healthy childhood/relationships. pony is smart and thoughtful, he was always put first so he never had to go out of his way to put himself first. steve sees that and wants to protect that gold in pony. the thing that makes them different. and steve is bad at showing it but he cares for pony, so deeply.

and if any of you say steve doesn’t care, go reread the bottle breaking scene from the book.

and so of course some of sodas people are very similar, steve and pony girl are cut from the same cloth, the cloth just got treated differently after it was cut.

sorry that was not a good analogy.

ANYWAY. this is what i came up with for nowwwww, if i have any more thoughts ill add on later.
