And that's what he did. They left M'Baku and Okoye in charge of Wakanda, they were the ones that knew better how to deal with their own. They gathered everyone still left from their team and boarded the jet. There was nothing for them to do in Wakanda, except offer help in case needed - anytime.

As soon as they were on the jet, he looked at the remainder of his team. 

Defeat. 

Hopelessness. 

Anger. 

Sadness. 

That's what he saw on each and everyone's faces. He assumes his face showed similar emotions. He wanted to say something, anything, that would help them, but for the first time in his life he was speechless. There was only one thing on his mind. It wasn't revenge or hate. There'll be plenty of time for that. Rather, it was a prayer, a chant. 

His body was rigid, but he was afraid he will collapse all the same. Dread, fear, anxiety and everything in between were in charge of his body, making his locked muscles tremble. He had to remain calm, he had to. She had to be there. She couldn't vanish. She couldn't be dead. Not her too.

As they made it to the Stark Tower, he ran, without uttering a word to anyone, to her apartment. Begging anyone that would listen to his prayers.

Let her be there.

He was at her apartment door, completely out of breath, in a true state of panic, hyperventilating but without the ability to draw in a breath. He knocked on the door, relentlessly, with too much force, the door shaking under his fist. Only one thing was on his mind. 'Please open the door. '

'Please open the door.'

'Please.'

He couldn't breathe anymore.

The door finally opened. Her face slowly poking through the little crack. As soon as she saw him, she opened the door wide and Steve took one step before collapsing before her, arms enveloping her waist as he hid his face in her stomach.

"Steve...w-" she was surprised, but worry soon enveloped her. Her hands immediately smoothed over his hair, cradling his head. She heard it then, the soft wail coming from the kneeling man, his tears staining her shirt.

He was Captain America, the super soldier, the first avenger and yet before her, right now, he was just Steve Rogers, a simple man from Brooklyn, but a broken man, finally letting his emotions and sadness bubble to the surface.

"Honey..." She whispered, feeling his sadness as the captain cried for everyone that he lost that day, but thankful to at least still have her.
