Examine! Sera's first shortbow.

Itâs yet another testament to its sentimental value how Sera keeps this short bow with her. Given how few things your scout kept on her person or held onto as you and the platoon travelled made it very unique. It was her first, the one that she had made for her as a child using money she scraped together fending for her family, the first symbol of her progress becoming the woman she was now. You know that Sera wants to blame herself for many of the things that happened as she was growing up, but you also know that being with her does well enough in stemming those thoughts. Pressing into them like a nagging mother wasnât the way to keep Sera in the light. A firm smile. A gentle laugh. Attentiveness when she spoke. Showing that she very much mattered to you. Those were the gifts you gave her instead. That and being her friend.Â
You werenât very familiar with archery (though you are good at setting arrowheads on fire and aiding her in combat) but you knew that this shortbow was intended for target practice rather than hunting or combat. The low draw weight and draw distance made it perfectly suited for a girl earning how to shoot. Sera had two bows as a knight that were issued to her, one shortbow for scouting and skirmishes and she also had a fearsome longbow which was used in conjunction with wind magic for harrowing feats of sniping and artillery fire. But neither of those yet had the wear and loving use that this one did.Â
The tips of the limbs were worn where the strings were tied, and even you could tell that it had seen its share of bowstrings over the years. Youâd seen Sera prepare this one, and watching her wind the line herself, tying the strands together then straining the sinew until it was worked together... well. Youâre not sure youâd call it therapeutic with how it worked her arms and back (yours hurt just watching the 100 sequential draws) but it was certainly impressive the lengths an archer went through to become close with their weaponry.
It makes you think of the mace you had crafted for you when you were formally knighted, an implement that worked in tandem with your fire magic and the terrifying power of your blessing. You had some sentimental value to it of course, but it paled in comparison to how Sera was close with the bow you held in your hands. Gods, even the grip felt like it had been worn down over time to perfectly fit her hand. Yours must feel so alien to it. Ah, wait, youâre holding it wrong arenât you? When you wrap your fingers around something feels off. Perhaps you shouldnât be messing with it so much? You wouldnât want to hurt it and upset Sera. Sheâs kind with you, but even she probably has firm limits with something like this.
Setting it back with her things you smile, glad that you met her. Glad that youâre friends with her. Glad that you can put your- and by extension your other knightâs- trust in her hand, in her eye, and in her skill.
Thinking about Sera just makes you really happy, sometimes...
