Whilst in Middlesbrough during my residency at mima, went to see Mark Peter Wright’s sound art show in a gallery on a train platform - Platform A.
Strange Strangers consists of all new sculptural works made from everyday materials, subjects and technologies associated with sound, music and Nature documentary tropes. The exhibition presents a set of hybrid representations at once familiar, humorous and monstrous. Wright’s use of materials extends beyond a formal appreciation of the object and instead strives to reveal the hidden constructs of power between humans and non-humans. His work utilizes technology as sculptural components that are repurposed in order to trace eco-political relations. At the heart of Wright’s use of such materials is his desire to shift away from a human-centric appreciation of media. Instead he offers a parallel outlook that continually ties media, technology, music and films into the entangled world of non-human animal others.
