What do you love about AU fanfiction, if you like it? What you you dislike about it?
Interesting question.
First and foremost, I love AU fanfiction. I love the ability of some authors to create a completely different universe, a completely different world and still keep their characters in character, still have more or less the same relationship dynamics than in the original series. One example of a great AU fanfiction is plastic-cello's Ballad of Tony and Loki, an Avengers Frostiron fic, which is set in the late 60s to early 70's with Loki as the front man of a band. So tbh, it has next to no similarities to the Marvel movies (okay, except for a few things in the last (?) part of the fic, but never mind) but still the author manages to keep Tony and Loki pretty much in character.
What I dislike are those half-AU fics, like a fanfiction set in the Avengers universe where Loki just happens to be a good guy. Okay, there are some nice ones, like for exapmle generationloki's "How Tony finally got Loki into bed" series, but on average I don't really like this kind of fics much.
Another kind of AU I don't like is one where the characters are completely OOC, which means there is absolutely no relation to the original series left except for the characters' names.
I hope this answers your question. Otherwise, my ask box is open.
