SPACE LUAU BY PLASTIC NANCY

    Space Luau is the freshman album of Plastic Nancy, a Psych Rock band from Richmond, VA, yet the record feels much more solid and mature than what may be expected of most bands’ first extended work. The album goes into a deeper exploration of the psychedelic sound tested by the group on their EP She's So Fancy, released back in December.

   Space Luau plays more heavily with the meticulous aspects of production, such as the use of extra effects (often respective to songs), like at the end “A Day In The Park” there is the sound of a light rain falling, ultimately adding to the mood of the track. The band also utilizes a lot of “wah wah” along with fuzzy, whiny guitar parts, demonstrating the garage rock aspect of their sound.

    Along with the instrumental production, there was a bit more focus on vocals as well on this record, as a number of songs have an echo vocal effect to them. Unfortunately, most of those songs were back-to-back, kind of deteriorating the authenticity of the sound and making me wonder how such songs would translate live.

    Nonetheless, Plastic Nancy has a way with creating good grooves and nice variations in tempo, allowing some tracks to melt into one another and others providing contrast, reflecting the band’s musical versatility. Aside from instrumental progression, the group also toys with more complex ideas and therefore lyrics, helping in their whole psychedelic, spacey vibe. Some songs convey simple but hypnotizing moments or images while others more curiously question the world, people, and concepts around us.
