Overmolding is an molding process of creating one single part using different materials such as thermoplastic or elastomers. In a laymen language, overmolding is a process of putting additional layer of material over and around another material.

Over the years I have used many CAD/CAE applications so I didn’t think I would have much difficulty choosing the software I’d use for our development projects. Since the toy forms are primarily organic forms I had to get out of my comfort zone of feature based design and jump into surfaces based design apps. This has proved to be a real challenge. I have been researching for months and now I am neck deep in evaluating several different powerful CAD packages that, like any application, have the strengths and weaknesses. So, here’s the list so far: SpaceClaim, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, MecSoft VisualCAD, Geomagic Design, Geomagic Sculpt, and most recently, Rhino. The main challenge is that I’m working with surface meshes (generated from character design software or scanned forms). These files (STL or OBJ) files have inherent flaws when translated into other CAD apps to use as a virtual solid that can be used to create mold tools from.
