Place Project Artwork
Place Post-Critique Response
With this project I achieved what I set out to do. Which was to create a tranquil journey that people would go on when viewing this artwork. The weaknesses of this project would be not enough video overlay. This should happen throughout the full video. When you enter a regular scene without the distorted reality effect it tends pull you out of the video.
Some suggestions to improve this artwork would be to use more of the overlay effect. This effect achieved some great responses from people in the class. Some found it peaceful, while some found it jarring or threatening – when the water would appear to flow over the bridge, or the crunch of the snow. It was interesting how some of the experiences were mixed. However, the overall experience with the sound and the meditative motions of the camera with overlay tended to be a meditative one.
I learned a lot from doing this project. I really want to explore video more. There are a few items I’d like to invest in; although not necessary for this project, a remote shutter, and a gimbal camera stabilizer to start. These would be nice tools to help my future video endeavors.
POST-CRITIQUE RESPONSE
I’m so impressed by this critique, is really change my thought about how to view an artwork and how to present an artwork. Few things that I would like to change for my project are first the casting heart. There has to a more interesting way to hang it and work with the form but I’m still thinking about it. Second, the plastic around it I would like to put more and maybe cut it in a more interesting shape I think that looks a little bit random. And I would like to have two of my work join together in the bottom and also be able to break apart as two work.
Place is really an interesting topic to talk about, I would love to make a whole series with different out form that hangs with different shapes to represent different places, keep thinking about what other places mean for me or mean for everyone. I feel like choose home as the place would be the easier one because everyone would have empathy or we have a common understanding of home, but if I do a series then it won’t be that easy for people to guess what this might represent for.
Overall, I’m happy with my project but I think I can do better.
Post-Critique Response
My strengths in this project were the form of the orbs or bubbles, the perspective, and the colors of the background. People said that they like the form in this piece with the size of orbs decreases as the orbs going towards the house. Also, they like how the orbs reaching to the top of the canvas. They like the perspective of the orbs which they make think you are far away from the figure. They liked the color choices for this piece because it blends well with the orbs.
My weaknesses are the house and the orbs at the top. They said that the house was too small to be a house which I agree with. I thought making it smaller can give an illusion of the house is far away. I can improve from this house by making bigger with white and black paint to change the structure of the house. They also point out how there’s a lot of negative space at the top of the canvas. I can easily improve it with black and graphite by drawing the orbs with graphite then paint it black.
I learned that you have to be careful with paint because I had a hard time to paint over the green with yellow. You can still see some part of green in the yellow. I might do a series of paintings with different colors but keep the forms. I want to test different colors that mix well together. Also, I might try different shapes instead of arcs because I feel like it can create more of a challenge.

Project Four Proposal
For this project, I plan on 3D printing cookie cutters and making traditional sugar cookies with them. First, I will model the cutters on Tinkercad. When completed, I will run my print on the 3D printers in the digital fabrication lab on the second floor of Sherzer. Then, I will take them home, make a homemade sugar cookie dough, roll it out, and use my cookie cutters to shape the cookies. After they are all baked, I will frost them and decorate them with sprinkles. I will then display them inside bowls on top of a Christmas-themed tablecloth.
The concept behind this piece is essentially home. The shape of the cookie cutters are modeled after the three places that I’ve lived in my life--my childhood home, my parents’ current home, and my current apartment. The reason that these are sugar cookies is because when I was younger, my grandmother started a tradition of baking and decorating sugar cookies together every year right before Christmas time. The cookies were never complicated, just any old sugar cookie recipe, and the icing was basically just powdered sugar and water. For decoration, we’d mostly use the little sugar crystal sprinkles. My cookies are displayed in the bowls because they are bowls that my grandma had in her house that I’d use every time I would go over there. Seeing and even hearing the clinks of the ceramic takes me back to my childhood immediately. This piece has a lot of personal and sentimental value behind it.
Place Project Ideas
Black & white photography. Pictures of the ‘after’ photos of childhood places paired with original childhood photo.
Form: Photography (physical prints)
Content: The images will be images I collect from scrapbooks and things I have at home of my childhood. I will be taking photos on a b&w film
camera of those same pics from my childhood in the present day.
Process: I will rimage and digital scan the photos that I have collected. I would rent/buy a film
camera and go to the sites in the photos and take the photo.
Experimental video. I choose a series of adjectives that describe a “place” that i’ve encountered and recreate that feeling though different clips paired together.
Form: This would be a video.
Content: Would consist of me describing the feeling of a place strictly through imagery.
Process: I would put together a group of words in a bowl or hat and pick three. From those three adjectives I would find imagery that helps in portraying what they are without the use of words.
Mini animation creating the feeling of home. Illustrating the saying “home is where the heart is”
Form: This would an animated short.
Content: The content would include mini sketches of what and how I feel about home.
Process: I wills story-board, sketch, draw in adobe illustrator and put the scenes together in after effects or something similar.
Place Reasearch Journal
FORM:Short video/film.
CONTENT: The storyline of the video is of a dad showing his two daughters how to make a paper airplane.
PROCESS: This could have been filmed either two ways. This could have been completely scripted and staged all the way through or they could have been prompted and filmed organically.
