St. Paul's Bloor Street No 2 Old Film Version. Opened in 1860, the third incarnation of St. Paul's Bloor Street at 227 Bloor St E in Toronto Canada seats over 2000 and is now the the largest Anglican church in the city. The building was designated a Heritage Property by The City of Toronto in 1989. If I designed an app that let you scroll through random pictures of say wildlife, sent you notifications when it had new pictures, you could pull down to refresh, had an algorithm that showed you your favorite animals - all the features people talk about as being addictive in social media - you probably wouldn't lose hours upon hours refreshing it the way people do Instagram or TikTok.
This is why while I definitely do agree social media is designed to be addictive, but the conversation beginning and ending with that misses the fact that we only use those sites because they're basically holding our social contacts hostage.
Which I get is some strong language but consistently when I talk about leaving social media this is what people cite over and over again. They captured the market share of our friends and families and we pay to get them back with our personal details and content to train their opaque AIs. Studies have shown that people would be more likely to pay for their friends and family to stop using social media than to pay to get it back - they destroy value and commodify you for the privilege.
Call me crazy but I just think our social connections are too important for a company - any company - to own.
This is why I really recommend switching to decentralized social media - Mastodon and Pixelfed are great ones to start with.

Pinterest, has a lot of ads, more AI posts are coming up lately, but you can really customize your feed and what you see and tune it into a very inspiring feed based off your interests
Dropout tv! I'm usually seeking out a lot of funny videos, and I watch a few too many reels/tiktoks/shorts in a day, but dropout makes it way easier to watch medium to long form videos. full of comedy, diversity, nerdiness, and genuine people, it's the only streaming service I pay for and it's 100% worth it
Augh finally found the perfect Instagram alternative and it's literally So nice to have a social media that's photo centric again. So much amazing photography β¨
