Would you ever write a long fic that has one of the main characters die at the end/unhappy ending?
I wouldn't write a fanfiction where main characters die (unless maybe a villain?). I get too attached to the characters! But, in my rough outlines for a dystopian/fantasy/scifi novel (I haven't nailed down much in the way of genre) I definitely want to explore leaving a narrative, storyline, character arc, etc. unfulfilled in a way that hopefully leaves an impact on my readers. I have a couple plans on how to do that, but as I said, nothing ironed out story wise yet.
