Levi was not your typical pirate captain. He didn’t revel in slaughter, and he wasn’t overly demanding. Unless it came to cleaning. Then he was a hard taskmaster. His ship had to be spotless, pristine. On those times that they had to shed blood, he insisted it be cleaned right away before it soaked into the wood. He hated dirt, gore, and grime with a passion.
Maybe that’s why he liked the sea so much. The water was ever moving, so it seemed to him that, even with everything that lived in it, it was constantly self-cleaning. Plus the sea was full of salt, so that certainly kept it even cleaner.
He knew that all sorts of creatures lived in the sea, and it was rumored monsters resided beneath the waves, but he wasn’t certain he believed that. Oh, some of his crew swore up and down that they’d seen strange things in the dead of night, but pirates were a superstitious lot, so they could just be imagining them. He didn’t completely dismiss the notion, but he himself had never had such an encounter. Until one fateful day.
They’d left port and been out to sea for five days. The sea was calm, the sky clear as the sun began to slip below the horizon in the west. Levi was leaning on the railing looking down into the clear waters, two of his crew with him. It was unusual for pirates to have a female on board, but Petra was very useful. She was rather adept at medicine and cleaning, and enjoyed helping the cook.
“Look Captain, a mermaid!”
Her voice broke into his musings, and he realized he’d been focused on nothing. Looking where she pointed, his breath caught in his throat. The mermaid was male, his top half naked and pale as the moon. His dark hair looked fluffed from the slight wind and small droplets of water still clung to it. Levi couldn’t tell the color of his eyes, but his tail and fins were the most beautiful blue-green he’d ever seen. It was his first time seeing any of the creatures his crew spoke of, and ‘monster’ was the farthest thing from his mind. He heard Oluo commenting on how dangerous they were, but tuned him out, simply enjoying the view of such an exotic creature.
