The Bug Was sitting at my desk When a bug just appeared Out of nowhere It was small and shiny Brown not black Which made me pause In the past my instinct would be To pull out a fist And assert my power Yeah I would have flattened it there and then Without any remorse Yet this time I paused Observed Wow this tiny creature was alive And vying for a little space to coexist with me Who was I to hurt it? Let it live I cried And so I did The bug had been nervous before Perhaps aware it was being observed Once it knew it was safe The bug relaxed and Scurried here and there With a certain abandon Aimless meandering Without purpose or reason Then it disappeared Only to reappear later With wings Wow the dude could fly as well That’s impressive shit Aren’t you a clever thing? My six year old son Once castigated me for killing A family of ants Who descended on an apple core And enjoyed a feast on my bedside table Unable to tolerate the infestation In seconds I murdered the lot of them My son screamed in pain and horror Since that moment I am changed Still a murderer at heart A killer of tiny defenceless creatures But a reformed one Would I kill again? A mosquito Or a cockroach Yes. I would And yet I reflect on my right to do so The fact I get away with killing creatures What does it mean in fact? Does it mean the planet is fundamentally doomed?
