Pierre Schmidt is a German artist, known as Drømsjel who creates psychedelic imagery that combines collage and illustration techniques.
To create these pieces, Drømsjel splices vintage 20th century style photographs of feminine figures and hand-drawn pencil sketches, which he then proceeds to embellish digitally. The result is quite surreal and melancholic. The way in which the flowers emit from the figures eyes and mouths looks almost painful.
The imagery Drømsjel uses is familiar yet it takes us to a new dimension. The imagery of the females are vintage, yet the piece as a whole has a futuristic feel.
I really enjoy the way he splices the imagery in such an unusual way and uses the flowers as the constant contrast. I myself have used flowers as a steady contrast throughout my contrast book.
Drømsjel also uses interesting captions for his images. For example the top right image is labelled ‘If I Was Gravy To You’. The one beneath is called ‘I Might Be Wrong’, and the one to the left of that is captioned ‘How To Disappear Completely’. These captions are probably the main reason why i gained inspiration from this artist because it doesn’t fit its image in an obvious way, but you can see the links.
