In October of 2012, Alan Gastelum started documenting Nicole Mournian's famous pie making. They spent a day in a kitchen making images of Nicole's beautiful process. Here are a few photographs from that day.
Since that day, Nicole went on to win 4 out of 7 awards in the 2012 KCRW Good Food Pie Contest - igniting a desire to be the best pie maker in the world. She has entered the National Pie Championships and this photo essay, will be about the journey to the contest. This trip takes them across the Southern US where they will try as many pies as they can as they try to identify what it is about filling in a crust that has created the legend of the quintessential 'American Pie'.
In addition, filmmaker Casey O'Brien, will be making a documentary titled, PIE FIDELITY.
"PIE FIDELITY is a documentary following a group of friends and one pie maker across the USA. Watch as this team travels through the south, gathering pie wisdom and belt loops on their way to the National Pie Championship. The Documentary will be edited and sent to festivals in the hopes of winning non-food based awards. We hope to create a touching and inclusive all-American story about one of our Nation's most bragged about foods. Pie history, cultural history and documentation of a people fascinated by filling in pastry crust."
Also, Alessandra Molina will be producing the trip. A little bit about her-
"Alessandra Molina was born and reared in Hollywood, CA. After toughing out many years of Catholic education in Los Angeles she began work at the Honest Company. She loves animals, hoagies, the elderly, and Beyonce. She looks forward to capturing the stories and traditions of people and their pies. And maybe eating a few along the way as well."
