Το αγώνισμα της ορεινής ποδηλασίας (Mountain Bike) ολοκληρώθηκε στην περιοχή Izu, στην πιο δύσκολη διαδρομή των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων από το 1996 όταν και το αγώνισμα αυτό εντάχθηκε στην Ολυμπιάδα. Αφού οι αθλητές κάλυψαν μια απόσταση 1300 μέτρων, μπήκαν στο σιρκουί του κυρίως αγώνα στο οποίο έκαναν 7 γύρους. Με μήκος γύρου 3,85 χιλιόμετρα, 150 υψομετρικά σε κάθε γύρο και εξαιρετικά δύσκολους…
