“Oh, for crying out loud, she’s just tryin’ to walk by.” Jane calls out more loudly, “Really, even with the ring? Hands off, bub.”
Although Maura’s polite smile remains intact, the guy looks like he suddenly remembers someplace else he has to be.
“Welcome back, stud.”
“Oh, honestly,” Maura settles back on her stool, rolling her eyes but also smirking. “Don’t be so jealous. That was a doctor who recognized me, just showing a bit of professional respect.”Â
“Uh-huh. Did you get professionally respected by any lady doctors between the stall and the sink?”
"I told you, you shouldn’t shower before we come out,” Jane sips her beer. “I wouldn’t have to keep all your suitors away if you let your corpse stench do it for us.”
“I’m not going to not shower after a floater autopsy. These people did nothing to deserve that. Not to mention, being stuck right next to me, you’d be the primary victim of my stench.”
“Honey, I’ve been immune for years. Oh, look at this,” she spots another in her peripheral vision. “Two in the same minute. That’s a record, even for you. Nope,” she twists on her stool, banishing him easily. “Back where you came from.”
“How come it’s always me you assume they’re coming to chat up?”
“Who in their right mind would wanna talk to me when you’re right here?”
“Me,” Maura answers, and leans over the bar to kiss the corner of Jane’s mouth where it has turned up into a smile.
