FrĂ©dĂ©ric Chopin (1810-49) - Trois nouvelles Ă©tudes, No. 1 in f-minor, B. 130. Performed by Ewa PobĆocka, 1848 Pleyel piano.
Iâm sure many of these tips could be applied to continuing music studies outside of the piano, but studying piano is one of my great loves. I hope these help any musicians struggling to keep up with their practice at uni x
step 1: research university facilitiesÂ
It's very likely that your university will have a music school or department. Check that out! Always check the university website and if you canât find anything, email a member of the faculty. Good people to ask would be your academic advisor if you have one or a member of student support. It may be that your university has practice rooms, and these may have pianos in them. Look into how much these cost to rent regularly and if there are any student discounts worth getting!
step two: look for a teacher
Unless you are a Beethoven in training you will probably want to find a teacher. there are two ways to do this; first contact your university to see if there are any music teachers in the faculty that regularly come onto campus. Second, look at music teachers in your area! Seriously, do not contact someone that lives more than 10 miles away from you. You think youâll be willing to make that commute every week... Famous last words. In picking a teacher, consider rates, distance to commute, style and skill level. When youâre ready, contact them and explain your situation! Most teachers are very understanding so don't be shy!
Step three: budget!!
Every student is a little bit broke, some more than others. Think about how much youâll be paying for tuition, traveling to and from tuition and the rental of your instrument itself every week. You absolutely can do this, but if you need to save money I suggest opting for fortnightly instead of weekly lessons. Ask around to see if anyone has a piano or keyboard they could let you practice on for free. You might even find someone will lend you an instrument! If you want to buy a keyboard or piano research the best you can before buying and look for student discounts!!
step four: be realisticÂ
Of course, we always go into these things with the best intentions but nobody practices as much as they think theyâre going to at uni, and that's okay! Being reasonable with yourself and letting yourself forget to practice sometimes helps you not get stressed. It also makes it far more likely youâll keep going! Remember the key with music is perseverance. Your best is good enough.
step five: join a society
This one is very important and shouldnât be too hard. There will almost always be something going on you can get involved in from a jazz ensemble to an orchestra. If you canât find a music society that you like, create one! You will be amazed at how many people there are like you out there who love music. Going to societies helps you make friends but also gives you opportunities to perform and improve.Â
step six: schedule it!
Write time to practice into your study schedule. I suggest quite early in the morning, before classes and when your brain is still quite flexible. When youâve put down time to study it helps make it a part of your day. The more you do it, the easier it gets to make it a habit. This is a really positive element to build into a day at uni; its a quiet and productive time for you to be creative. That's one of the most wonderful things about the piano. It gives you the chance in a stressful time to work at a repetitive and mindful task that is fulfilling to you, and Iâm quite sure anyone lucky enough to hear you! :)Â
and that's it! I really hope this help, let me know if youâve any more tipsÂ
