Artist Research: Vito Acconci, The Following Piece.
Vito Acconci (1940-2017) was an American performance video and installation artist who created this piece ‘The following Piece’. In Autumn 1969 Acconci randomly selected people in New York City  and proceeded to follow them until the person entered a private building this process could last from a couple of minutes to several hours, Acconci was brought around Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx as seen from his above mapped sketches. Although the subject matter of the piece is rather questionable and somewhat controversial due to the invasion of ones privacy and aggressive stalking nature it is also different and a makes for an interesting piece to interpret.Â
I really liked this piece and found it relatable to my project in the way in which movement is portrayed through travel (something which is necessary for covid to spread) I also quite like how the use of maps is incorporated in this piece this is something I would like to try tie into my own project.
I also lfound it interesting how the outcome of this piece was out of the artists controls in that it was the person who decided the final destination of the artists route rather than the artists himself, this lack of control and knowledge is also something that is very relevant during current times in this pandemic as we too  are left unaware of how many cases there will be, how much longer this will go on and the overall result of this pandemic.
In short I think this piece is a good visual portrayal of uncertainty.
