Why are Smartphones Getting Bigger?
To explain the present and venture into the feature we must first look into the past in order to see what brought such a revolution when it comes to the design of our favoutre gadget - the cell phone, or if you will, the smartphone. Why are they getting bigger and how what has influenced this? Is this a clear message of what modern life looks like today?
The best example of the fact that people are once again opting for larger smartphone devices is the Apple iPhone 5. Back when Steve Jobs was one of the key figures in what Apple will develop and how they will approach things he came to an interesting mathematical conclusion. Namely, he argued that people did not need a screen larger than 3.5 inches for their smartphone device. The reason behind this was that the thumb could then quickly reach and click anything on the screen. This meant that a 3.5 inch iPhone was a brilliant device for anyone, espeically bussiness people who are often in a rush. He also argued that if wanted larger screen for entertainment that we should turn to tablets, laptops, Smart TVs and our computers.
However, after his death, the next iPhone, the iPhone 5, had a 4 inch display which went against the legacy Jobs left behind. This isn't because Apple's new design team wanted to disrespect Jobs - it is just business and what was best for the company. You see, all of the top selling smartphones today have display between 4 and 5.7 inches and Apple need to finally adapt to the new demand on the market.
My personal comentary is that I appreciate larger screen, but I feel that there is a certain limit that should be placed. In my opinion, a phone that has a screen between 4 and 4.5 inches has the ideal size. However, the majority of people in the world will disagree with me it seems. Afterall, let us not forget how successful the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2 are.
In fact, Samsung will soon release the Samsung Galaxy S4, the flagship of its smartphone armada and unlike the 4.7 inch predeseccor, this smartphone will be a 5-inch beast! Why? Well, it is what the people want it seems, and the company does have to combat the devices such as the Sony Xperia Z.
What About The Rest of Us?
So what about people who would gladly get something such as the Galaxy S4, but do not wish to due to its size? There are hardly as many alternatives avilable for a particular model, especially if it is currently the latest. Well, companies like Samsung try to rip us off wit their so-called "Mini Series" which are horrible. The Galaxy S3 Mini didn't offer any of the quality that the S3 had. It was, honestly, a completly diffrenet phone that just looked like a smaller version of the Galaxy S3.
Perhaps this is the reason why Apple will always be such a popular smartphone manufacturer. I will gladly settle for a 4 inch iPhone if Android manufacturors fail to provide great quality along with a 4 to 4.5 inch display screen. As someone who works with smartphones on a daily basis I can tell you that I am not alone in this opinion and that a very high percentage of people actually share the exact idea.
So, just why are they getting so big? Well, it seems that people are opting for larger screens becouse they are no longer using a smartphone as a phone, but a media entertainment centar. In that regard, a bigger screen is needed for: multitasking, games and watching video. The last of the three seems the most unvelivable to me, as I cannot imagine someone watching an actual movie on their smartphone, but it seems people actually do this.
