Man showers are weird or great I just had a long rumination on the magic of one of my stories (and by extension how it works in nearly all the others).
The system is simple, you become an expert in certain kinds of magic the same you get degrees in colleges and obviously there are lots of questions a person who studies must ask. like say you’re trying to get into conjuring.
Well what kind of conjuring? Is it of a specific item? A generalized set of things? Are you trying to conjure something entirely from magic energy or by bringing it from elsewhere? Or are you trying to conjure by alchemizing ambient elements into the thing you’re trying to make? is there a level of complexity you’re interested in achieving with your conjurings? Anatomically correct? Identical in image only? Do you want your conjurings to have autonomy or are you attempting to employ a level of control?
Are you trying to conjure via summoning? Do you want to work specifically in summoning rituals? Are you trying to summon actual persons you know or know of or create ways for people to do that? Are you trying to summon spirits or beings of alternate planes? You need to extensively study in the schools of multidimensional observation, multidimensional access, multidimensional ethics, etc. Will you be working exclusively in big time rituals or do you intend on portable summonings?
How do you plan on performing your advanced levels of magic? Everyone’s different, most work orally, sign language is extremely common, using objects is a typical method. Do you plan on employing runes? Because that involves you taking many classes in linguistics to certain the general principles of rune inscription and a familiarity of a vast variety of written languages to make your own inscriptions. There’s also the theory on magic’s effectiveness and longevity in different types of materials and why inscribed magic lasts longer than non-inscribed, gotta know that stuff.
And then I forget where I dropped off and got into imagining the mQuartz, basically iphones. Or tablets. or something, and how advanced rune technology created the constraints for what effectively amounts to smartphones with facetime and the ability to take and store photos, and how they’re powered by ambient magic but the runic tab that’s used to absorb ambient magic has planned obsolescence.
Somewhere along the way I was thinking about using one of these mQuartzes or whatever I’ll call them to project an image using another piece of projection technology but there are compatibility issues because different companies have proprietary runic language that makes it difficult for one magitek device to work with another.
And at a certain point my mind wandered to how not everyone learns magic or needs to learn advanced magic, in fact in many ways magical education is a lot like math science or history, where you have to get a lot of broad strokes early on just enough to get on in life and specialization happens later if you so choose, you just need to know enough about gathering, projecting, and manipulating your own energies to run a few basic things in people’s lives.
I had one hell of a brain blast in tonight’s shower.
