It just dawned on me that the voices of Disney’s Quasimodo and Phoebus, Tom Hulce and Kevin Kline, both played Hamlet onstage in the early ‘90s.
It’s too bad that only Kline’s performance was filmed. It would have been interesting to see Hulce’s performance too and to compare them.
And of course Tony Jay, the voice of Frollo, was a Shakespearean actor too - I don’t know all his roles, but I know that he played Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and the Merchant in Timon of Athens - so all three of Esmeralda’s “suitors” have Shakespearean backgrounds!
I have an idea that will sound cynical, but i think it's true: the fandom for Hunchback (at least people outside of the Frollo fandom), have a slight bias and elements of self insert and pretty privilege. the disney fandom really likes to self insert in movies, and they do in Hunchback with Esmeralda, and are probably disgusted at the idea of being liked by a disabled ugly man. They try hard to force Hunchback into a princess film mold, by making Phoebus into a 'Disney Prince', but their analysis doesn't line up with the movie.
The funny thing is that there’s no reason to make things up. Disney’s version of Phoebus is already a good guy. At worst you can say that he’s too easily forgiven for being complicit with Frollo for so long (though it’s very human of him to not be willing to sacrifice his life until he’s personally ordered to commit an atrocity), or that his romance with Esmeralda is slightly rushed. But he’s handsome, heroic, smart, funny, respectful, and a good friend as well as a good love interest. Why make Quasimodo seem worse than he is to make Phoebus seem better, when Phoebus is already good enough?
Another funny thing is that Hunchback already fits the mold of a Disney Princess film… but the “Princess” character isn’t Esmeralda, it’s Quasimodo! He’s the one with the classic Disney Princess character arc of starting out in an oppressive situation, longing for a different life, and ultimately finding the courage and faith in himself to attain it. That’s the type of character arc shared by so many Disney heroines, yet it’s actually very atypical of Disney’s male heroes, who more often have character arcs of “striving for a goal, then making a foolish or selfish mistake that almost costs them that goal, but finally learning a moral lesson that lets them overcome the odds.” But of course Disney Princess fans don’t typically want to use Quasimodo as their self-insert.
Had and unfortunate realisation today that I share a hair cut with Phoebus from Hunchback of Notre-dame 😔

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)
PART 2 (ft: Flourish Cape in Front of Face™)
Phoebus | Allegory of Midday
Artist: Anton Raphael Mengs (German, 1728-1779)
Date: 1769
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: La Galería de las Colecciones Reales / The Royal Collections Gallery, Madrid, Spain
Description
Apollo-Phoebus has his head silhouetted against the sun and directs his fiery arrows downwards with his bow, at the point where the sun's rays are most direct at midday. His appearance is quite reminiscent of the "Apollo Belvedere," from the cloak fastened by a brooch to the sandals and even the characteristic topknot in his hairstyle.
The way he’s looking back at Esmeralda 🥹
SO CUTE!
His puppy eyes are so adorable
