“THE VILLAINS”
by Phobik
Self-taught artist Phobik started creating his own characters in high school and says his original comic book illustrations—transporting real people, contexts, and life lessons into a surreal comic book dimension—are primarily inspired by his personal experiences growing up in Hollywood. He described his ethic to @Medium as “Do good, Believe in good, Be kind,” and has a history of putting his ideals into action—working with projects like Adam Ayala’s @SmileSouthCentral and Jason Ostro’s @GabbaGallery alley project, both of which focus not on replacing residents but rather making life a little better for the existing community. Since his first solo gallery exhibit at Gabba Gallery in 2005 Phobik has gone on to create multiple works for the Gabba project in Westlake, including this January 2018 mural in the alley off of Beverly Blvd immediately east of the gallery. @phobikgod

“GREAT STAIRS MURAL”
by Jason Ostro, Clinton Bopp, and Phobik
Between running LA’s Gabba Gallery and curating several alley mural projects all over Los Angeles Jason Ostro still enjoys finding time to wield a can of spray paint—and the fractured planes of the ‘Great Stairs’ at the end of Neola St. in Eagle Rock, CA, provide an ideal showcase for his abstract compositions. With each of the three flights painted individually (Phobik’s at the top is unfortunately not visible from this angle), Ostro also collaborated on sections of reinforcing wall, playing well with Bopp’s bee and Phobik’s reinterpretation of Frida Kahlo’s “Pobre Venadito.” When I asked Ostro about the heart and arrow routinely appearing in his work he said his work is always an “expression in flow.” He says art emanates from, or in pursuit of, love: “The arrows always make the pursuit and flow to get to the love. Sometimes the arrows lead directly to love and sometimes they lead you astray.” @jasonostro @clintonbopp @phobikgod @gabbagallery
