Born and raised in New Zealand Clinton Bopp has lived in Los Angeles for the last two decades, creating work inspired by the interconnectedness of people and reflecting the complex influences of nature and the urban. Taught to paint by his artist mother, Judy, Detroit-born Jason Ostro opened @GabbaGallery in Los Angeles in 2012, and three years later was named one of the “8 best art curators in Los Angeles”—the same year he also began curating an alley beautification project. A successful artist in his own right Ostro’s positive outlook is reflected in the ever-present hearts and arrows embedded in his “cracked glass” compositions. In 2015 Bopp and Ostro carried the spirit of the Los Angeles alley as they crossed the country for Miami’s Art Basel and together contributed this work on NW 27th St in Wynwood. Between running LA’s Gabba Gallery and curating several alley mural projects all over Los Angeles Jason Ostro still enjoys finding time to wield a can of spray paint—and the fractured planes of the ‘Great Stairs’ at the end of Neola St. in Eagle Rock, CA, provide an ideal showcase for his abstract compositions. With each of the three flights painted individually (Phobik’s at the top is unfortunately not visible from this angle), Ostro also collaborated on sections of reinforcing wall, playing well with Bopp’s bee and Phobik’s reinterpretation of Frida Kahlo’s “Pobre Venadito.” When I asked Ostro about the heart and arrow routinely appearing in his work he said his work is always an “expression in flow.” He says art emanates from, or in pursuit of, love: “The arrows always make the pursuit and flow to get to the love. In 2014, dismayed by the state of the neighborhood around Gabba Gallery in Los Angeles, gallery owner Jason Ostro decided to make a difference and turn "blight into bright." Beginning with a gorgeous mural he painted with Andrea LaHue (posted Feb. 15, 2016) in a nearby alley, his vision quickly spread to three separate alley projects in the immediate area. In the spring of 2015 LA artist and movie industry designer/art director Kophns applied his talents with a group of notable artists 'brightening' the parking lot behind the 7-Eleven at Beverly Blvd. and Vendome St. With a bold, colorful and graphically distinctive style, Space of Art says Kophns grew up exposed to a wide variety of street art and began himself using markers to draw characters on neighborhood walls. Kophns has now completed multiple works for the Gabba Arts District, and Ostro's vision has blossomed to include several other projects in neighborhoods all around LA. @kophns  @gabbagallery
