Anyway make sure you always research any medicine you take or are giving your pets. Also make sure you have the medicine that was prescribed to you, don’t assume that it’s a generic brand like I did.
With hyperthyroidism in cats, they’re treated with methimazole. My vet mailed me my prescription, and after I had my cat put down they emailed me a photocopy of it at my request. Methimazole is CLEARLY written on the prescription. Price Chopper pharmacy gave me metolazone. Metolazone is used to treat heart failure and is a diuretic, one of the precautions of this drug is to not take it if you have issues with your kidneys. Hyperthyroidism comes with kidney issues. When Fluffy stopped eating, I called my vet about it. I’ve come to realize that I wasn’t talking to an actual veterinarian, because after I told the person on the phone that I was giving her metolazone, she said “oh that must be the generic brand, my cat has been taking hyperthyroid medication for 5 years and he’s fine.” She suggested I separate feeding time from medication time and I did. And Fluffy started eating again. So I kept giving her the medication, because I didn’t know better. When you google metolazone, a lot of results come up that include hyperthyroidism and Methimazole. Metolazone is what you DONT want your cat with hyperthyroidism to be taking. It shut down her kidneys, so she wasn’t moving her bowels, and eventually, after not passing waste, became so full that she would no longer eat. She stopped being able to hold down water. She stopped being able to walk. She was actively suffering. So I called the vet again and they were booked until mid August. I called another vets office and they got her in the next morning. We wanted to start her on IV fluids. But when the vet found out she had been taking metolazone instead of Methimazole, he informed us that the damage was done, and it was very unlikely that she would survive. I had to put down my 17 year old cat, a cat I’ve had since I was SIX YEARS OLD, because of a mistake the pharmacy made. I lost my cat because someone didn’t care enough to do their job right. They KILLED my cat. This cat who me and my mother have spent hundreds, maybe a thousand or more, of dollars to keep healthy and safe. She should have lived well into her 20s, instead she suffered for weeks and had to be euthanized. I won’t deny that I should’ve listened to my gut and stopped giving her the medication when I realized something was wrong. That I should’ve done something sooner, but I wanted to do what the vet said. And it wasn’t their fault, it was the pharmacy. If anyone knows any lawyers that take on pharmacy malpractice cases please message me because I plan on taking legal action against the pharmacy and the person who gave me the wrong medication. There is no excuse for what happened.
